Description

Earth Advantage Institute (EAI) an Oregon nonprofit corporation has a need for a Chief Operating Officer to assist the Executive Director in managing and advancing the organization.

The Earth Advantage program provides green building standards, design and installation assistance, education & training, and home certification to single and multi-family homebuilders, remodelers, and the manufactured homes industry on a fee-for-service basis. EAI also provides outreach and education to home buyers and the public.

The program is well established with over 120 builders, remodelers, and sponsors throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. EAI had developed community, commercial, and remodeling standards and has 4 licensees. Its most recent initiative is its CarbonAdvantage desk to develop carbon solutions for the built environment.

Position Overview:

The COO will be responsible for managing all business and operational aspects of the organization including financial, development, marketing, staffing, and managing relationships with home builders, product sponsors, and donors. Proven business development and management, leadership, strategic thinking, and decision making skills in addition to solid financial skills are essential. Superior interpersonal and communication skills are necessary.

The chief operating officer (COO) will report to the executive director and is responsible for the company's day-to-day operating activities, including revenue and program growth; infrastructure, expense, IT structure, CRM solutions, reporting, work force development cost and margin control; and monthly, quarterly and annual financial goal management.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, monitor, and take corrective actions with respect to financial budgets and performance.
  • Direct company operations to meet budget and other financial goals.
  • Direct short-term and long-range planning and budget development to support strategic business initiatives.
  • Establish the performance goals, allocate resources, and assess policies for effective management implementation.
  • Execution of business strategies and work-flows for Earth Advantage's programs and services.
  • Direct and participate in acquisition, partnership and growth activities to support overall business objectives and plans.
  • Participate in program market development and development of key performance metrics to establish measures for success.
  • Develop, establish, and direct execution of operating policies to support overall company policies and objectives.
  • Oversee a staff complement of 40 in 3 offices.

Qualifications: 

Primary Qualifications:

  • Interest in and passion for green building, energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.
  • Prior experience as a senior manager, Development Director or the number 2 role in a nonprofit organization, including during start-up phase, is preferred with a proven track record of business and financial management
  • Bachelors degree and minimum 5-8 years professional experience preferred

Requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, public speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Solid working knowledge of budgeting, sales, business development, goal setting and monitoring and strategic planning.
  • Ability to generate respect and trust from staff and external constituencies.
  • Self starter with high motivation and energy level.
  • Critical thinking and big picture perspective while not losing sight of the details.
  • Exceptional follow-through and ability to keep engaged partners appraised at all times.
  • Comfort with fast paced multi-tasking.
  • High IT proficiency level including Xcel, CRM, Outlook, and PowerPoint products.

Compensation: Earth Advantage, Inc. offers a competitive compensation package. Salary commensurate with experience. Location: Portland, OR (limited travel required).
