Background:
The Morton Arboretum invites inquiries, nominations and expressions of
interest for the newly created position of Chief Development Officer.
Established in 1922 by Joy Morton, founder of the Morton Salt Company, the
Arboretum has grown to include 1,700 acres of plant collections and gardens
amid spectacular natural landscapes of woodlands, prairie, lakes and
streams. Along the 23 miles of hiking trails and scenic roads, collections
display over 41,000 plant specimens representing 3,300 kinds of trees,
shrubs and other plants from around the world. The Arboretum draws over
415,000 visitors annually, and has a membership of over 19,000 families,
individuals and students.
The Morton Arboretum ranks among the leading
arboretums in the world in size, age, quality of specimens and programs in
Education, Plant Collections and Research.
The Arboretum is a not-for-profit
501(c)3 charitable organization and its current assets are valued at $200
million.
Duties:
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Chief Development Officer will
initiate and further the Arboretum's relationships with current and
prospective individual benefactors.
S/he will develop and pursue ideas,
contacts and strategies to raise funds from individuals, corporations and
foundations in the Chicago Metropolitan Area, the Midwest and elsewhere
around the United States.
The CDO will - separately and in tandem with the
Executive Director and the Board of Trustees - identify, cultivate and
solicit major donors for both operating and capital purposes.
In addition,
the Chief Development Officer will direct, prime and support the Executive
Director, Board of Trustees and staff in fundraising as appropriate to
maximize the effectiveness of the Arboretum's fundraising efforts.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be an experienced fundraiser from a cultural,
environmental, educational or commensurate setting.
S/he will possess a
proven, successful track record in direct, individual major gift
solicitation, expertise in capital/endowment campaign planning and
implementation and a formidable knowledge of the nonprofit and philanthropic
climate in the Chicago Metropolitan Area.
The CDO will be a leader,
motivator and mentor, with the ability to inspire confidence and cooperation
among the Arboretum's staff, volunteers and benefactors.
