Position Overview:
Co-op America seeks a Chief Business Officer to manage personnel, financial, legal, board, planning and facilities matters. This person will have significant experience in nonprofit or business management. A graduate degree in business or non-profit management, law, or accounting is preferred.
This role is supported by several director-level roles, including an assistant director of administration.
This is a major opportunity to be part of the leadership team in the nation's leading green economy nonprofit.
Responsibilities:
I. Personnel:
- Policy development, legal review, and implementation
- Benefits development and implementation, in coordination with Senior Accountant/Benefits Manager
- Oversee hiring coordination
- Develop and implement hiring policy development as needed, providing strategic hiring support for departments (law, policy, outreach information, etc.)
- Personnel review oversight:
- Facilitator development
- Ensuring all reviews are conducted
- Provide follow-up support for reviews as needed
- Departure oversight
- Policy development and implementation
- Employee performance issues oversight:
- Assist managers in developing strategies for handling underperforming employees
- Ensure that managers are following up with underperforming employees
- Ensure that managers are following the law with underperforming employees
- Coach and mentor managers as needed
- Act as facilitator in difficult personnel reviews
II. Business and Legal, in consultation with outside attorneys:
- Contract development
- Work with relevant departments to craft Co-op America's position
- Handle contract negotiations as needed
- Oversee contract recording, management, monitoring, and review as needed
- Intellectual property
- Manage development of intellectual property assets with staff and outside attorneys
- Ensure implementation of IP protection measures
- Oversee licensing as needed
- Ensure proper legal reviews of personnel issues
- Ensure proper legal review of Internet and privacy issues
- First Amendment review of publications and web content
III. Finance & Budgeting Oversight, in consultation with Executive Director:
- Budget development with Finance Director and teams as part of the Operating Plan Process
- Financial review (monthly, quarterly, annually)
- Audit oversight
- Tax oversight
- State registrations for fundraising oversight
IV. Technology/IT Oversight
- Technology strategy and planning oversight
- Ensure communications with key stakeholders on major IT projects
- Ensure major systems planning in 1-3 year windows
V. Sponsored Programs Management
- Strategy and development of fiscal sponsorships with the Programs Manager and Executive Director
- Oversee sponsored programs
- Ensure proper accounting, oversight, and financial reporting
VI. Facilities Oversight
- Space Team Oversight - allocation and preparation of space
- Office expansion/move planning and oversight
- Office maintenance oversight
- Oversee office management
- Phone/other key equipment
- Annual/quarterly "clean up days"
- Green office policy development and implementation [with Green Team)
- Emergency preparedness
VII. Organizational Systems Development
- Review and development of organizational systems for growth
- Review of membership and operational systems with Marketing and Membership Director
- Review of technology systems with the IT Director
VIII. Direct Staff Oversight:
- Director of Finance and Asst. Director of Administration (includes Finance and Accounting Team with 3 people)
- IT Director (includes a Technology Team of 5 people)
Qualifications:
- 5 year's experience with nonprofit or business management required;
- Graduate Degree in business, non-profit management, law, and/or accounting a plus;
- Experience in leadership within a participatory organization and advanced process and facilitation skills a plus;
- Experience in mentoring and guiding staff in personnel matters;
- Supervisory experience required;
- Accounting and budgeting experience;
- Knowledge of legal issues of nonprofit organizations;
- Personnel policy experience a plus.
Compensation: $55,000-65,000 DOE; Excellent benefits
Hours: Full Time, 4-day work week
