The U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington, DC-based national nonprofit organization of over 16,000 corporate and organizational members from every sector of the building industry united to transform the building marketplace to sustainability, currently has excellent consultancy opportunities in the growing green building movement.  

Position Overview: 

The Chapter Growth Consultant will assist with the growth of USGBC chapters. Specifically, this project will entail helping approximately five chapters to operate effectively and in compliance with USGBC policies and federal/state laws pertaining to their 501(c)(3) status, building each chapter's capacity to hire a chapter-funded staff person by the end of the contract period, and strategic and annual planning.

In addition, the consultant will assist the area Regional Council made up of representatives from each chapter within the region with projects ranging from coordinating meetings and calls, developing meeting/call agendas and notes, enhancing communications and collaborations among the chapters within the region, and working on region-specific projects.

Note: This is a consultancy, not a position of employment with the U.S. Green Building Council. The consultant will be an independent contractor for the term of the project and will not receive employee benefits from USGBC. The consultant will work of the consultant's home or office located in the general area of the five USGBC chapters for which the consultant will provide services. The consultancy is non-exclusive, but the consultant must agree not to provide similar services for competitors or customers of USGBC during the term of the consultancy.

*Positions available in Upper Northeast region, Northeast Corridor Region, Southeast Region and Florida/Caribbean Region.

The areas in which the consultant's services are required include:

  • Provide guidance on chapter processes, databases and membership.
  • Counsel chapters on ways to improve technical support to customers
  • Advise committee chairs on promotion of chapter events.
  • Consult on proper chapter board election processes and post-election transition.
  • Coordinate with chapter leadership on logistics and planning for a Regional Council meeting
  • Share expertise and ideas with other consultants and national and regional USGBC leadership at annual Greenbuild conference
  • Attend chapter events and Regional Council meetings periodically to consult with chapter officers and members.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent professional experience as an association administrator, non-profit leader or similar consulting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of non-profit management
  • Outstanding project leadership ability.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must have own computer and minimum software suite including MS Office
  • Appreciation of USGBC mission
  • Experience with green building a plus
  • Willingness to travel within the region and occasionally to national events

Project time frame is 16 months beginning September 1, 2008. The consultant's fee is negotiable based on the consultant's experience and the time expected to be spent on the project.
