PHIUS is transforming the building sector by developing and promoting North American specific standards, practices, and certifications for buildings, professionals, and products to create structures that are durable, comfortable, healthy, and super energy efficient.

Founded in 2003 as a community housing organization PHIUS shifted its attention to education, certification and research in 2009. Since then PHIUS has trained over 2,000 architects, engineers, energy consultants, energy raters, and builders in the passive building standard.

The organization is the leading passive building research and information provider in North America.

PHIUS provides training and certification to architects and construction professionals that enables them to design and build ultra-efficient residential and commercial structures, and to cut energy consumption in existing buildings by retrofitting them to the PHIUS+ 2015 Passive Building Standard. PHIUS also certifies projects through intensive design review and on-site quality assurance protocols.

In 2009 the Passive House Alliance US, LLC (PHAUS) was founded as a program of PHIUS. It is a membership organization for passive building professionals, manufacturers, builders and building owners. Collectively the Alliance members help promote PHIUS’s mission of making passive building practices commonplace. The Alliance advocates for best passive science and practices, accepted industry standards, climate specific passive building standards, technologies and solutions nationwide and locally. As of the end of 2016 the Alliance has 16 Chapters nationwide and close to 600 active members.

Position Overview

Passive House Institute US (PHIUS), located in Chicago, IL, is seeking a full-time PHAUS Chapter Coordinator to take its membership organization Passive House Alliance US (PHAUS) and its nationwide chapter advocacy to the next level.

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic individual who can help us strengthen and evolve the exceptional North American passive building community that PHIUS engendered and has championed for over a decade. This full-time position will entail:

Location & Compensation:

This Chicago-based position will report to the CEO, COO and (eventual) PHAUS Development Director, and receive reports from the Membership Coordinator, Council Members and Chapter leaders. The position includes paid holiday and personal leave and health insurance benefits. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Travel will be required as necessary.

Responsibilities

Critical Tasks/Responsibilities:

• Establishing and maintaining communication with chapter leaders

• Coordinating and facilitating PHAUS council member activity

• Developing and supporting chapter programming and member benefits

• Facilitating feedback on chapter and member needs

• Overseeing fulfillment of chapter reporting and other requirements

• Harmonizing activity with broader PHIUS/PHAUS events and initiatives

Qualifications

Required Competencies:

• Excellent speaking and writing skills:
  • Is a “people-person.” Sociable, able to nurture communication and community
  • Ability to effectively communicate PHIUS goals, initiatives, interests and concerns
  • Not conflict-averse; able to tolerate and work with opposing views and mediate conflict
  • Commitment to open and honest communication

• Leadership, organizational and financial management skills

• Experience and proficiency in strategic planning, public relations, and marketing

• Experience developing partnerships, agreements, MOUs, etc

• Experience in fundraising - identifying sponsorship opportunities, track record with successful grant and proposal applications

• Knowledge of, and drive to continue learning about, passive building, building science, and/or 

• The energy efficiency sectors, such as working with manufacturers, consultants, architects, builders, and/or contractors active in the passive house and/or high- performance building industry

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with and passion for PHIUS’ mission, having a personal sense of urgency about meeting the organizational mission

• Technical competency of passive house concepts and a personal sense of environmental stewardship

• 3+ years of experience being a motivator and organizer ideally in a non-profit organizational setting

• A degree in a related field

• Event management skills

• Proficiency with software, such as Microsoft Office, Google Docs, social media, web publishing (blogging), e-newsletters, CMS, and internet best practices; some technical skills (such as light html/css) a bonus
