The Central Coast Butterfly Ecologist will help advance conservation of the Oregon silverspot butterfly, Speyeria zerene hippolyta, on the central Oregon Coast.
Specifically, position will monitor Oregon silverspot butterfly populations and habitat conditions, working with private landowners and agency personnel to implement management strategies in order to improve habitat conditions; help with field aspects of a captive-rearing program; organize and oversee work crews and contractors to implement management activities; and write progress reports on the above activities.
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in the natural sciences (or equivalent experience) and at least two full years (or three field seasons) of relevant land management or field research experience (including previous experience with ecological monitoring and directing work crews). Experience in butterfly ecology/entomology and familiarity with dominant local flora are preferred.
Physical requirements of the job include the ability and willingness to work outdoors under variable weather conditions and hike 3-5 miles a day over steep terrain. Applicants must provide their own transportation. This position is based out of Florence or Waldport, Oregon.
The Central Coast Butterfly Ecologist is a non-exempt position supervised by the Oregon Coast Stewardship Ecologist. The position begins July 1, 2002, and ends October 15, 2002. The Butterfly Ecologist will be paid $10.00 to $12.00/hour for 40 hours/week, depending on experience. Housing will not be provided.
