About the Campaign
Oceana’s strategic outreach and grassroots organizing efforts played a significant role in building the movement to prevent the former administration from allowing offshore drilling and seismic airgun blasting to commence off the United States Atlantic Coast. Our campaign efforts, in conjunction with those of our partners, have resulted in more than 125 East Coast municipalities, 1,200 elected officials, and thousands of business and fishing interests publically opposing seismic airgun blasting and/or offshore drilling.
Position Overview
This position reports directly to the Grassroots Manager and will work closely with the other Campaign Organizers, especially the Mid-Atlantic campaign organizer based in Washington, DC, to execute a campaign plan and carry out the tasks necessary to meet campaign objectives, track timelines and report on progress. This position requires initiative and an ability to work on one’s own to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks, while managing a varied and high volume workload.
This position will focus on building on this winning model to stop the expansion of offshore oil and gas drilling activities off Virginia’s shores. Campaign Organizers will also work to build support for Oceana’s other campaigns as needed.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Build a broad, effective campaign including but not limited to: grassroots coalition building, public engagement and repeat volunteerism, legislative advocacy, traditional and social media acquisition, and development of a self-sustaining and continuing foundation of support for Oceana’s organizational goals.
- Execute the campaign in conjunction with Oceana’s team of professionals in DC and in the field. This will include working with other field staff, scientists, legislative and communications professionals, as well as Oceana’s volunteers, online activists, allies, and others.
- Regularly report on progress of the campaign, and lead the charge for overcoming obstacles to ensure goals and objectives are met.
- Perform additional duties for Oceana’s Climate and Energy campaign, as well as other campaigns, as needs arise.
Qualifications
Job Requirements:
- 3+ years of campaign experience, including engaging volunteers and building a foundation of support for a policy outcome.
- Demonstrated success building and cultivating relationships in a way that persuades individuals to support an organization’s agenda and generates measurable results.
- Demonstrated initiative to self-motivate, work with diverse communities, and serve as a team leader.
- A track record of being detail-oriented, with excellent organizational skills and follow-through, and ability to multi-task.
- Experience using phone, email, and social media to engage large numbers of supporters and activists.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
- Experience working with traditional media.
- Computer literacy with Microsoft Office applications, proficiency with Salesforce.com (or other CRMs) a plus.
- An ability to work well with others; collaborative and good-natured team player.
- A valid U.S. Drivers’ License. Must be willing to travel.
