The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a non-profit health-advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., that focuses on nutrition and food safety. CSPI publishes Nutrition Action Healthletter, the nation's largest circulation nutrition newsletter. CSPI provides valuable, objective information to the public, represents citizens' interests before legislative, regulatory, and judicial bodies, and ensures that advances in science are used for the public's good. CSPI is supported largely by the 850,000 U.S. and Canadian subscribers to its Nutrition Action Healthletter and by foundation grants.
Position Overview:
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) seeks an experienced campaign manager with a strong interest in how America's food system affects health, the environment, animal welfare, and other matters. This is a unique opportunity for someone to organize a major national project that will stimulate events and activities throughout the country. The goals of the project will be to educate the public and advance local and national policy proposals.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a plan that integrates policy, field, coalition outreach, media, Internet and activist outreach to build support for National Food Day events and activities.
- Collaborate with organizations, advocates, concerned citizens and elected officials at the national, state and local levels to generate interest in and support of project events and activities.
- Determine staffing needs, recruit, and supervise staff, consultants, and volunteers needed to advance the campaign plan.
- Develop communications materials for a diverse audience including teachers, local organizers, and government officials.
- Publicize the project through other organizations, journalists, and social media networks.
- In collaboration with the CSPI development department, assist with funder outreach.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in directing a project from conception to completion and a clear track record in overseeing effective campaigns, ideally on issues related to health or agriculture.
- Strong skills and experience in public speaking/lobbying and/or organizing people around an issue.
- Ability to recruit, train, supervise and motivate staff, consultants and volunteers.
- Superb analytical and strategic thinking skills.
- Excellent writing skills with ability to generate copy under tight deadlines.
- Highly motivated self-starter with excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and frequent deadlines.
- Computer proficiency with MSOffice, online organizing, and social media tools.
- Ability and willingness to travel if needed.
- Interest in and commitment to CSPI's work and mission.
