Duties:


The Campaign Director is responsible for providing strategic advice and direction
to the work of member organizations of Alaskans for Responsible Mining (ARM)
in carrying out a coordinated statewide mining reform campaign to limit the adverse
environmental, economic and social impacts of the mining industry in Alaska. This
includes establishing goals and priorities for the campaign and developing an annual
campaign plan in consultation with ARM members. The Campaign Director
facilitates communications among ARM members groups and is responsible for
building strong partnerships with national, state and regional organizations and
activists who will help implement the campaign. The Campaign Director also
facilitates ARM decision-making, including organizing teleconferences and
meetings of ARM members. In addition, the Campaign Director is responsible for
the day-to-day management of the campaign, and of campaign staff and
contractors hired by the campaign.

This position reports to the ARM Management Committee and ARM Steering
Committee. Pursuant to action of the ARM Steering Committee at its July 19, 2002
meeting, the ARM Management Committee was created to provide supervision of
the campaign director, including conducting performance evaluations and providing
management advice and assistance upon request.


Responsibilities:

    Campaign Leadership and Planning:

  • In consultation with ARM members, facilitates development and
    implementation of a strategic plan for the campaign;
  • In consultation with ARM members, develops and oversees implementation
    of plans for education and grassroots organizing, media outreach, legislative
    action, legal action and research needed to accomplish campaign goals;
  • Prepares a detailed list and timeline for carrying out campaign tasks and
    works with ARM members to ensure that assigned tasks are completed;
  • Establishes campaign milestones and assesses progress on a regular basis,
    making adjustments as needed;
  • Assists ARM members in identifying capacity needs within their
    organizations, and assists in capacity-building of members so that the
    campaign can accomplish its goals;
  • In consultation with ARM members, develops a "rapid response" plan for
    directing reactions to emerging issues, environmental catastrophes,
    regulatory decisions and other unplanned external events affecting the
    campaign whose immediacy and importance take precedence over planned
    work, and oversees campaign response to such events, ensuring that
    regional organizations take the lead on mine-specific issues; and
  • Serves as the public spokesperson for the campaign, and represents the
    campaign in other forums such as the national mining campaign and the
    Western Mining Activists Network.

  • Campaign Management and Development:

  • In consultation with ARM members, develops an annual budget for
    campaign and a campaign fundraising strategy;
  • Maintains regular communications with Tides Center (ARMs fiscal sponsor
    and Directors employer), files financial information, reports, and any other
    documentation required by Tides in a timely manner, participates in Tides
    Center orientations and trainings as necessary;
  • Assists ARM members in identifying funding sources for ARM-sanctioned
    projects they have agreed to carry out;
  • Supervises campaign staff and contractors assigned to the campaign;
  • Organizes and hosts monthly conference calls, meetings and strategy
    discussions, and organizes trainings and workshops, as needed;
  • Establishes and maintains Internet communications with ARM members,
    including maintaining listservs and campaign Web site;
  • Maintains communications with foundations and donors supporting the
    campaign, including timely filing of grant reports and campaign updates;
  • Prepares periodic activity reports for the ARM steering committee; and
  • Prepares annual report of campaign progress for ARM members and
    supporters.

  • Outreach and Education:

  • In consultation with ARM member organizations, works to expand and
    strengthen ARM membership and campaign partnerships;
  • Works with the Alaska Conservation Alliances Mining Issues Group and
    ARM listserv to help disseminate information on mining issues as they arise;
  • Develops and nurtures media, political, foundation, donor and activists
    contacts who will be useful in advancing campaign goals;
  • Coordinates ARM response to requests for meetings with mining company
    and agency personnel, and ensures that ARM spokespersons are briefed
    and prepared for such meetings; and
  • Represents the goals and interests of the statewide mining reform campaign
    in public forums, such as state agency management meetings and mining
    workshops, in consultation with and with assistance from ARM member
    organizations.


Qualifications:


    ARM understands that no candidate will possess all of the qualifications
    listed below. The ideal candidate would possess:

  • College degree; with coursework or training in environmental policy, mining,
    communications, environmental sciences, law, or related field;
  • Minimum three years nonprofit or for-profit management and/or campaign
    experience;
  • Familiarity with mining activism, the mining industry, and/or Alaska
    conservation issues a plus;
  • Proven fundraising experience;
  • Willingness to live in Alaska, frequent travel required;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to prioritize and handle multiple
    tasks;
  • Computer experience, including familiarity with communications software,
    as well as experience in Internet communications; and
  • Demonstrated ablity to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.


Compensation:


The annual salary for this full-time exempt position is $42,000 45,000, depending
on experience. The Campaign Director is an employee of the Tides Center, and is
subject to the terms of employment and leave, health and disability benefits as
specified in the statement of employment policies of the Tides Center.
