Position Overview

California Sea Grant, based at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego (UCSD) seeks a resourceful, innovative professional to appoint to a position as a California Sea Grant Extension Specialist with a preferred emphasis on marine or estuarine aquaculture (although candidates with freshwater aquaculture expertise will also be considered).

This position will be based in Moss Landing, California at the California State University's Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (hereafter MLML); however, the Specialist will be a full-time employee of SIO/UCSD.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will be expected to develop collaborations with other researchers, organizations, industries, and educators to conduct integrated research, education, and outreach projects.
  • The Specialist's activities will integrate with and enrich the MLML academic community, and will involve and promote greater interactions between MLML, other academic marine aquaculture programs, and California's aquaculture community.
  • The Specialist will teach one class a year at MLML as part of the graduate program in marine sciences.
  • The successful applicant will be encouraged to work with and advise graduate students and will have the opportunity to help develop infrastructure, programs, directions and curricula for a new aquaculture center located at MLML.

Qualifications

  • The Extension Specialist working in this job will have a background in marine or estuarine aquaculture (freshwater expertise considered) and will provide research-based information and leadership in topical areas related to aquaculture husbandry, nutrition, genetics, diseases, systems design, or policy.
  • The Extension Specialist will be expected to obtain external support (grants or contracts) to support his/her program.
  • Candidates with a Ph.D. are strongly preferred; a Master's degree with a minimum 3 years of post-graduate experience may be acceptable as experience equivalent to obtaining the Ph.D.
  • Some experience with teaching at the college level (either as an instructor or teaching assistant) is desirable.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate strong potential for accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego and MLML's commitment to achieving excellence and diversity.

Compensation: Salary is competitive and is based upon UCSD pay scales, commensurate with a candidate's experience, but is expected to start in the range between $56,448 and $68,100 annually.
