Supervisor: Director of Online Communications 

Description:

The Business Analyst is responsible for helping Defenders optimize investments in online and direct mail, acquire new members, drive larger and more frequent donations, and generate more online activism. (S)he will achieve this as lead analyst and reports manager for Defenders' new reporting & analytics platform. Defenders of Wildlife already is among the industry leaders in direct mail with 500,000 donors and online with 400,000 e-subscribers.

The Business Analyst will help Defenders grow this base and improve other metrics through a combination of quantitative analysis, reporting, and strategy. Utilizing principles of database marketing, the Business Analyst will help Defenders deliver the most appropriate messages to the appropriate member segments at the right time. While most of this person's time will be spent managing analytics and reporting for online and direct mail, (s)he also will help target appropriate major donor prospects and grassroots organizers.

As the Business Analyst comes to understand the profiles and needs of Defenders' constituents, (s)he should propose strategies for acquiring new members and improving other metrics. Preferably, the successful candidate also will manage selected day-to-day aspects of the database including data transfers and manipulation. 

Duties: 

1. Analyze data on or related to Defenders members, e-subscribers, and prospects. Conduct both regular and ad hoc analysis.
2. Create, manage, and ensure distribution of the appropriate reports to the appropriate staff.
3. Serve as manager and lead expert for Defenders reporting & analytics platform.
4. Play key role in helping to develop Defenders' strategies for member/e-subscriber acquisition, retention, and increasing penetration.
5. Innovate and recommend new and better ways of segmenting Defenders' member/e-subscriber base.
6. Play significant role in helping Defenders generate greater online activism and target potential offline activists.
7. May conduct some basic database management activities including data transfers.
8. Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Outstanding quantitative and analytic skills, especially working with data.
2. Mastery of Microsoft Excel or equivalent databases. (Business Analyst will mostly be working with larger database using Crystal Reports, but fluency in Excel is minimum requirement to demonstrate skill set.)
3. Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work with people from multiple departments and at all levels of the organization.
4. Strong organization skills and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
5. Interest in Defenders' mission. 

Desired Qualifications:

6. Mastery of Crystal Reports, Microsoft Server, Access, and other reporting and database management tools.
7. Experience in database marketing, especially for online or direct mail.
8. Skill in building quantitative models - especially for modeling lifetime customer value / NPV. Statistical modeling experience is a plus.
9. Experience in cost management and profit optimization.
10. Database management experience including ensuring data hygiene.
11. Masters of Business Administration, advanced degree in a quantitative area, or equivalent.
12. General knowledge of accounting rules in the nonprofit sector is a plus.
13. Knowledge of conservation / environmental issues.
