Description

The Boston Harbor Islands national park area includes 34 islands and peninsulas situated within the large "C" shape of the Greater Boston shoreline. The islands are rich in natural and cultural resources, and are managed by a unique Partnership of federal, state, city, and nonprofit agencies.

Position Overview:

Qualified and motivated person to assist in planning and implementation of a new Solid Waste and Recycling Program for the Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area, in cooperation with the Boston Harbor Island Alliance, the National Park Service, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and other involved partners.

Alternatives must incorporate current and projected costs for waste pick up, transportation and disposal, including specific operational needs such as storage or transport.

Develop alternatives for improved recycling for summer of 2012 and present alternative to the Park Operations Committee. Alternatives must incorporate projected cost and operational needs for collection, pick up, transportation, and disposal of recyclables. If an alternative is implemented, coordinate purchase and installation of necessary materials or equipment. Following installation, observe the effectiveness of operations and respond to any issues or challenges from the public or park managers.

Qualifications:

  1. A strong background in environmental science, waste management, recycling operations or related fields.
  2. Ability to travel routinely at least one day a week to either Georges or Spectacle Island.

Schedule: Full- or part-time (flexible schedule). The project term is roughly 490 hours. The final schedule will be determined by mutual agreement between the contractor, the National Park Service and Boston Harbor Island Alliance.
