WEST also has broad experience creating interdisciplinary teams from an extensive network of associates, providing expertise tailored for individual client needs.

Position Overview

WEST has an opening for a biological field technician for a project running March 6, 2017 to March 1, 2018 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Primary duties involve conducting standardized avian use surveys (i.e. avian point count surveys for small and large birds) and bat acoustic monitoring. Avian use surveys will occur year round and bat acoustic monitoring will occur from March 15, 2017 to October 15, 2017.

Fieldwork will require long days outside in a range of temperatures (hot in summer; cold in winter) and wind speeds. Candidate must be comfortable with hazards typical of the environment (sharp vegetation, driving a four-wheel drive vehicle, dust, extreme heat and cold). Job duties require use of a compass and Global Positioning System devices.

Training will be provided. Avian use surveys will be conducted 3-4 days per month and monitoring bat acoustic detectors will occur 1 day each week. Housing will not be provided. Vehicle will be provided or mileage will be reimbursed. GPS units and other field equipment will be provided by WEST. Field technicians must be equipped with suitable footwear (rugged hiking boots) and appropriate clothing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or equivalent degree preferred.
  • Ideal candidates must be proficient in identification of Midwest bird species by sight and sound, with the deployment and management of bat detectors and acoustic data, and should be able to work independently and interact positively with project manager, field supervisor, landowners, and other technicians.
  • Candidates experienced in field bird identification and bat detectors will be given preference.
  • Employee must be able to appear for work on time (surveys often begin as early as sunrise), maintain focus for long periods of time, follow instructions from manager and team leader, maintain positive attitude, and accept guidance and constructive criticism.
  • Precise and thorough data collection is essential.
  • Applicants must be in good physical condition, as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme.
  • Environmental conditions include working in rain, wind, mud, and very cold or hot temperatures.
  • Candidates may encounter snakes, insects, and other wildlife.
  • Proficient use of topographic maps, compass, GPS units, and other field equipment required.

Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license is required upon submittal of resume. Investigation into driving record will be conducted upon hire.
  • Driving record must meet standards set to operate motor vehicle on behalf of WEST.
  • Position will require drug testing and candidates must be able to pass drug screening criteria prior to beginning employment.

Compensation: $12.00 - $15.00 per hour for technicians, depending on experience, and higher salary available for applicants with more experience. All positions with overtime pay for hours over 40 during a week.
