The Sustainability Coordinator will lead the behavior change program established in 2009 to place more emphasis on integrating sustainability principles and strategies into the lives and work habits of members of the Johns Hopkins Community.
With a strong understanding of community based social marketing, behavioral economics, and change management, the SC will design and facilitate programs that engage faculty and staff in a positive manner, emphasizing the idea that at Johns Hopkins, every job is a green job.
The overarching goal for the SC is to reduce the consumption of resources i.e., energy, water, office supplies, waste through direct interactions with the Hopkins professional community.
The SC will have the opportunity to take over an existing behavior change program that already enjoys a high level of success. Currently, the SC coordinates the Green Office Certification, Green Office Ambassadors, and Green Lab Champions programs, as well as other activities that encourage individual actions, such as dorm competitions.
The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:
- Provide hands-on management of the sustainability behavior change program, overseeing the administrative and coordination tasks associated with keeping the program vibrant and effective.
- Build strategic alliances with local area sustainable campus managers, and coordinate quarterly meetings and logistics of the B-CaUSE group in Baltimore, and the DC- Metro Sustainability group in Washington, DC).
- Serve as the point person on behavior change information, research and strategies by staying informed on the latest studies and writings on the topic. Occasionally facilitate internal workshops to keep staff apprised of new developments in the field.
- Working with Office of Sustainability staff to advance Office priorities and objectives, as well as facilities staff.
Need to be able to develop and maintain strong relationships with:
- Sustainability Data Analyst in order to make sure that behavior change program outcomes can be measured and charted for progress.
- Sustainability Outreach Coordinator to make sure that messages and branding efforts are consistent.
- Technical Services staff, to ensure that behavioral efforts complement existing resource reduction efforts taking place within Plant Operations, Design and Construction, and Real Estate departments.
- Administrative groups, such as HR, WorkLife, and University Administration to ensure that sustainability goals are disseminated to a large audience.
- Homewood Housing and Dining, Res Life, and student services to ensure that behavioral initiatives are having positive outcomes in the student communities.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or a relevant field is required; master's degree is preferred.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in the Behavioral Change field, with University or Non-Profit experience preferred.
Special skills and knowledge:
- Applicants must have strong writing, research, and communication skills.
- A high level of comfort interacting with individuals and groups on campus.
- Should have a solid understanding of change management, behavioral economics, and social marketing.
- Need understanding of principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship, and experience in working within university settings and with student and faculty populations on environmental issues.
- Helpful to have interest in energy technologies, renewable energy, and conservation practices.
