JOB DESCRIPTION:

Primary responsibilities will be collecting and processing native seed, as well as mixing seed and sowing it onto restoration sites. Individuals may assist with various plant inventories. Plant Ecologist Assistants will also be trained for and assist with prescription burns. Interns will have the opportunity to improve plant identification skills and learn about a wide range of ecological restoration topics.

QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS:

Currently enrolled college student or recent graduate with a major in a conservation/biology field. Some plant identification and horticulture skills helpful. Valid driver's license and a willingness to acquire an Illinois Herbicide Operator's License. Internship involves work in all outdoor weather conditions as well as indoor work, involving heavy lifting (50-60 lbs), and prolonged periods of time spent walking, sitting and standing. Requires a sighted individual (vision corrected to 20/20) to conduct seed collection, plant identification, and nursery maintenance; and with normal hearing (corrected to within a normal audible range) for interacting with employees and public. Possible work hazards include herbicides/pesticides operation, use of power equipment (i.e. string trimmers, atv, etc), and smoke inhalation from controlled burns. International interns (whether currently in U.S. or abroad) accepted through Council Exchanges only. 

SCHEDULE: Late August through mid/late November; 40-50 hour work week Monday through Friday, usually 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but occasional 6 day work week and/or evening work may be required.

STIPEND & BENEFITS: $35 per day to max. $175 per week, college credit as approved by applicant's institution and advisor, complimentary housing available on a first-come basis, worker's compensation, training, and safety equipment provided.
