Description

Earthjustice was established in 1971 as an independent, non-profit, public interest environmental law firm. Litigation is, and has always been, our primary focus. The core issues of the Alaska office are the protection of sensitive areas in northern Alaska from oil and gas development, conservation of the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska marine ecosystem, protection of the coastal rain forest, wildlife conservation, air and water quality enforcement, and mining activities in Alaska. Position Overview:

The Alaska Office of Earthjustice is seeking an associate attorney to join its staff in Juneau or Anchorage. The associate attorney position is a 2 to 3 year position, and successful applicants have typically completed a judicial clerkship or have 1 or more years of experience in environmental law or general litigation. Associate attorneys work with a team of attorneys to develop and pursue strategic litigation, primarily in federal courts.

Responsibilities:

Among other responsibilities, the associate will conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on issues relating to ongoing or potential litigation projects; draft motions, briefs and other pleadings; prepare comments on proposed agency actions and environmental impact statements; assist with discovery; and interact with clients and work with experts. The associate attorney may have primary responsibility for some matters, but will generally work collaboratively with other lawyers in the office.

In addition, associate attorneys typically become involved in other aspects of public interest advocacy, including non-litigation strategies and media outreach. Many associates have gone on to other positions within Earthjustice or with other conservation organizations.

Qualifications:

  • Timely admission to the Alaska bar
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental protection
  • Excellent research, writing and oral advocacy skills
  • Superior academic record.

The successful candidate will have an interest in being a team player, a strong work ethic, a sense of humor and a sense of initiative. We are an office of open doors; applicants should be willing and able to work closely in a collaborative setting. Earthjustice offers a competitive salary and an excellent package of health and other benefits.

To Apply:

Please send by email a cover letter, resume, law school transcripts (unofficial is fine), a recent writing sample not to exceed ten pages, and three professional references. If you do not have access to email you may send by US Mail. We will accept applications until the position is filled.
