Description

Portland State University offers a 4-year undergraduate degree with a major in architecture and has recently added a Master of Architecture degree to its offerings. The program entered candidacy status for professional accreditation with NAAB in July 2008 and the university has committed to adding new faculty in response to this opportunity to shape and substantiate the pedagogic direction and research base of graduate level studies. The Department has also recently moved into fully remodeled accommodation following extensive renovation of its established home, Shattuck Hall, on PSU's downtown campus.

The educational emphasis of the department recognizes the value of creative engagement with the prevailing realities of the city as a primary means of cultural transformation, and perceives Portland as an ‘urban laboratory' for experimental investigations of contemporary human issues. This takes place through interaction and dialogue with the communities at large and by continual acts of theoretical exploration combined with interpretive making with diverse media at multiple scales, including full-size fabrication.

Alongside a progressive attitude to design process and creative speculation, the department participates in the advancement of knowledge in contemporary issues and technologies of sustainable urban living and environmental stewardship. As such, promoting sustainability through academic programs and research is central to PSU's mission of serving the social, economic, and environmental interests of Portland and the greater Pacific Northwest region.
