Description
First Voice International's missionis to integrate communication technologies to facilitate the sharing of practical information amongst underserved communities.Utilizing its technology endowment of 5% of the WorldSpace Corporation satellite network covering Africa and Asia, FVI delivers information to remote populations using cost-effective and locally-maintainable systems.FVI utilizes its satellite capacity to broadcast both audio programming and computer-based multimedia to its target areas and includes a variety of other technologies such as AM/FM radio, Internet, and mobile phones to maximize the reach and impact of its programs.
FVI and its expanding network of partners enable the flow of locally relevant and, increasingly, locally produced information that addresses issues including (but not limited to) HIV/AIDS, good governance, natural resource management, and disaster warning and relief.
Satellite receivers have been placed with over 300 community radio stations for FM rebroadcast; receivers are also placed directly in community gathering points like schools and health centers where established listening groups discuss the issues. In addition, teachers, health care providers, local government officials, international aid workers and others can download text and data from FVI's Multimedia Service (MMS) to their personal computers using a simple connection to their satellite receivers.
Where computing facilities are not already available, FVI has designed solar-powered, satellite-connected community information centers (CIC) where users can access development information.Users of the MMS gain access to relevant information including training manuals, best practices, and general information on everything from agricultural methods to HIV/AIDS education.
