SmartWood (SW) is a program of the Rainforest Alliance created in 1989; it is the oldest global forestry certification program and has been accredited by the internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). SmartWood's mission is to promote the implementation of sustainable forestry worldwide.
Summary of Position:
The SmartWood Asia Pacific Regional Manager will coordinate and implement SW certification activities in the region. S/he will develop sales and business targets, help design and directly implement a marketing strategy for meeting those targets and provide leadership and training for implementation of SW certification protocols. This position will provide the necessary technical guidance to properly conduct all types of SW certification services and maintain and improve SW's image. The Regional Manager is responsible for oversight of the country office operations which includes office management, finance, legal and human resources.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Develop and manage SmartWood's marketing of its certification business in Asia
Pacific Marketing & Sales:
* Develop with SW management the regional strategic and business plans for the Asia Pacific region; and
* Directly market SmartWood certification to potential commercial, community forestry and wood products industry clients and meet sales targets for the region.
Customer Service:
* Provide customer service to current and interested clients in the Asia Pacific region, to include but not limited to providing information about certification, market linkages, and guidance on certification process, logo use, marketing, etc.
2. Project Management, Certification Management & Quality Control of forest and chain-of-custody services
* Serve as project manager for the Asia Pacific region in respect to certification scopings, assessments and audits. This includes job budgeting; service contracts; team identification and contracts; arranging logistical support to consultants; report review; liaison with clients in assessment, report review and disputes; peer review identification and contract; finalizing assessment reports to be sent to SW-HQ; and
* Ensure that SW representatives and consultants follow and implement the SW technical and administration certification protocols in the region.
3. Manage Certification Jobs
* Serve as lead auditor for pre-assessments, assessments, and audits for forest management and chain-of-custody certification; and
* Write and review certification assessment and audit reports of the international program.
4. Finance & Operations Management & Certification Systems
* Provide financial and legal oversight to the regional office; including budgeting, timely and accurate financial and tax reporting, compliance, and audits; and
* Oversee the day-to-day office operations of the regional office; including certification and chain-of-custody administration, as well as human resource matters.
5. Partnerships & Representation
* Serve as the senior representative for SmartWood with government, industry, and NGOs in the region and identify and develop new alliances; and
* Organize and deliver training courses for representatives and consultants in forest management and chain-of-custody pre-assessments, assessments and audits.
Qualifications:
* BS or BA degree in forestry/forest industries, ecology, or natural resource management; preferred MS or MA degree;
* 3-5 years of managerial level field experience in forestry or rural natural resources management and/or economic development;
* Experience in results-driven sales and marketing position with demonstrated success in achieving revenue goals;
* Knowledge of SmartWood FSC certification protocols, a plus;
* Must have strong planning, analytical, and project management skills, with ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines;|
* Strong interpersonal skills with the minimum 3 years experience in managing and motivating a diverse staff;
* Experience in overseeing the finance and operations of an office highly preferred;
* Strong verbal and written communication skills in English language;
* Asian language capability in either Chinese or Malay-based language a plus;
* Strong computer skills (i.e. word processing, spreadsheet and presentations); and
* Work experience in or knowledge of Asia a plus.
