The not-for-profit Monterey Bay Aquarium opened in 1984, and has earned a reputation for being among the world's finest. Located on Monterey's historic Cannery Row and featuring exhibitions that focus on Monterey Bay's diverse habitats and wildlife, it attracts between 1.7 and 2.4 million visitors each year.
The institution's mission is to inspire conservation of the oceans, both through exhibits and through conservation research and advocacy in such areas as sea otters, open-ocean fishes research, marine protected areas, fisheries health and others. More than 80,000 schoolchildren take advantage of the aquarium's free education programs and tours every year.
Position Overview:
The Aquaculture Manager is a full-time, salaried position within the Sustainable Seafood Initiative at Monterey Bay Aquarium's Center for the Future of the Oceans. The incumbent is responsible for managing the generation of content on sustainable aquaculture for sustainable seafood recommendations (consumers and business) and CFFO policy initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with the Senior Science Manager, refine and implement our institutional vision of sustainable aquaculture including supporting the development of species-specific standards for dominant and emerging species grown in land-based and marine systems.
- Compile, synthesize and analyze scientific information on various fisheries and aquaculture operations including peer-reviewed journal articles, stock status and other government reports and other reviews of sustainability.
- Develop, coordinate, and supervise research schedules for the aquaculture research team (Research Analysts, Contractual Researchers, and the Research Assistant).
- Identify aquaculture policy opportunities for the CFFO and work with the policy team to develop and implement appropriate strategies for engagement.
- Manage the aquaculture research team to ensure that their work meets program standards including the generation of sustainable seafood recommendations for consumers and business and content relevant for policy work.
- Engage in personal contacts with marine scientists, aquaculture experts, members of industry and non-governmental organizations to further our understanding and definition of sustainable aquaculture.
- Use this information to write Seafood Reports in accordance with the Seafood Watch Report format and standards and generate seafood recommendations using the program's sustainability criteria.
- Record references using Endnote reference software.
- Contribute to the development of new tools to support the program's work with major seafood buyers.
- Act as the liaison with the Outreach Team to ensure accurate representation of the program's seafood recommendations in all outreach materials and online.
- Submit the Seafood Reports for external scientific review, internal editorial review and revise reports accordingly.
- Submit reports for posting on the aquarium's public web site.
- Collaborate and promote information-sharing with members of the broader sustainable seafood movement.
- Work in a team environment with Sustainable Seafood Initiative staff, our 15 member Board of Advisors and other Monterey Bay Aquarium partner organizations to strengthen the scientific rigor of the program, gather new information, and reach consensus on seafood recommendations.
- Act as a spokesperson for the Sustainable Seafood Initiative on aquaculture sustainability by giving talks at meetings, and participating in relevant workshops and other outreach and special events.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of Masters Degree in marine ecology, fisheries or aquaculture, or equivalent experience is required.
- Strong understanding of emerging issues in marine conservation is critical.
- Strong understanding of the history, current dynamics, and contacts with key players of the sustainable seafood movement is critical.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to multi-task are important.
- Strong personnel management skills and experience are necessary.
- Outstanding skills in management of contracts is necessary.
- Demonstrated knowledge of aquaculture practices and conservation concerns is a must.
- Proven excellence in research using primary literature, databases, and the Internet is necessary.
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including the ability to craft compelling position statements and the willingness to contact aquaculture and fisheries experts on a regular basis, are essential.
- Knowledge, comfort, and proficiency in working with Microsoft Word, Excel, Endnote, and other software are expected.
