Description

Duties: 

Admit and care for injured and orphaned wildlife (focusing on birds) including treating and evaluating injured birds, feeding baby birds, cleaning cages, administering medications and record keeping; care for exhibit animals and their exhibits including raptors, snakes, turtles and insects; work with and support Sharon Audubon Center animal care volunteers; answer questions from the public who find injured or orphaned animals; teach outreach programs with live raptors as needed. The Animal Care Intern may also be involved with other aspects of the nature center, such as answering phones, helping with special events, teaching education programs, answering requests for information from the public and running the Nature Store. 

Qualifications:

Completion of at least two years of college coursework in environmental studies, biology or other life sciences. Experience with wild bird rehabilitation, animal care and/or raptor handling is strongly preferred. Some teaching experience is a plus. The most important assets are a strong work ethic, enthusiasm, commitment, a desire to learn, and the ability to work well with others, including staff, volunteers, other wildlife rehabilitators, veterinarians and the general public. This person must have confidence in working independently, motivation, leadership skills, and flexibility for working odd hours when needed.

Supervision: The Animal Care Intern works under the guidance of the Center Director. Training will be provided. 

Housing, Salary and School Credit: The intern shares a furnished apartment with two other interns at the Miles Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Sharon, CT, approximately 10 minutes from the Sharon Audubon Center. Interns will have private bedrooms, shared kitchen and bath. Salary is $270 per week. Students should arrange for school credit with their advisor beforehand, if applicable. 

The Animal Care position runs early May through September, dates somewhat flexible.
