Description

The Education Program Volunteer Coordinator will work with UEI Education Program Directors to expand the volunteer base of the Education Program. This Member's energy, knowledge and enthusiasm will be focused on building a volunteer base to increase the level of service that UEI gives to underserved schools and after-school centers, thereby promoting the stewardship of urban ecosystems through the scientific empowerment of local students and community members.

Duties and Responsibilities 

The specific tasks will include: 

1. Working with Education Program directors to lay the strategic groundwork for a long-term volunteer program;
2. Assessing current volunteer roles in the In-School Field Studies, Out-of-School Time Field Studies, and Greentimes Programs;
3. Coordinating strategic plans for the Education Program volunteer program to implement necessary expansions/improvements;
4. Working with Education Program staff to identify potential volunteer roles, training plans, placements, and recruitment strategies;
5. Coordinating logistics for recruitment events and training sessions, and assisting in training as applicable;
6. Recruiting and interviewing potential volunteers (including communicating with Boston-area volunteer organizations at the corporate, college/university, and community levels);
7. Organizing volunteer appreciation events;
8. Managing relationships between volunteers and Education Program staff;
9. Making necessary improvements to our volunteer database;
10. Participating in program-specific and organization-wide strategic planning processes. 

Skills and Qualifications 

We are looking for a hard-working, dedicated, self-starter who desires a rewarding and challenging experience in the non-profit sector. Only applicants dedicated to a year of public service through AmeriCorps*VISTA, the domestic Peace Corps, should apply. You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States to apply. 

Required: Prior experience as a volunteer and/or leading and training a group of volunteers; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively alone or as part of a group; excellent verbal and written communication skills; a desire to work with diverse groups of people and deploy them to enhance urban educational and youth development opportunities in underserved communities; computer literacy (MS Office, Access and/or other database tools); the ability to perform, prioritize, and coordinate a variety of duties and deal with deadlines; ability to work in fast paced but friendly environment. A positive attitude and sense of humor are a must. 

Desired: Experience in teaching and/or theories of education; Bi-lingual skills (especially Chinese, French-Cape Verdean, Spanish, or Portuguese) are a potential asset.

START DATE: July 2nd. Positions are full time and one year long with the possibility of re-enrollment for a second year. 

COMPENSATION: AmeriCorps*VISTA will provide a living allowance of about $410 (after taxes) paid once every two weeks. For all members that complete a year of service, they may choose either a $4725 education award or $1200 stipend.
