Description
~ The Washington County Solid Waste & Recycling Program provides information and resources to help Washington County, Oregon residents, property managers and businesses prevent waste, recycle and dispose of garbage properly. It also regulates how garbage and recycling is collected, stored and disposed of. ~
The Solid Waste & Recycling Program provides recycling information and resources to residents and businesses in all of the cities within the county, except the City of Beaverton, which operates its own program. The Solid Waste & Recycling Program's technical support and education are provided under agreements with Metro, the regional planning agency for solid waste management, and the ten participating cities.

Position Overview
The
Washington County Solid Waste & Recycling Program is seeking an
enthusiastic, motivated, independent and reliable person to increase waste
reduction awareness throughout Washington County.

Responsibilities
The
Waste Reduction Outreach Specialist will focus on the following topics:
- Food waste
prevention outreach to low-income or culturally diverse communities as
part of the award-winning Eat
Smart, Waste Less Challenge campaign. - General
waste reduction education to the public at community events. - Reuse and
recycling assistance at multifamily communities.
This is
a rewarding, life changing opportunity to support environmental stewardship,
develop a variety of skills and interact with diverse populations including
seniors, youth, and Spanish-speaking households.
Qualifications:
- Highly motivated
with a strong commitment to sustainability, and passion for resource
conservation. - A
cooperative manner and the ability to serve as part of a diverse team. - Interested
in engaging the public via group presentations, door-to-door canvassing
and at events. - Ability to
communicate orally and in writing in both English (advanced) and Spanish
(beginner or intermediate). - Detail
oriented. - Proficiency
in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Benefits:
- A taxable,
monthly living allowance ($12,530 paid over the term of service). - Upon
successful completion of a term of service, eligible Members receive an
education award of $5,775. The education award can be used to repay
qualified student loans or for further education in an accredited
institution of higher learning, vocational or trade schools. The education
award is taxed in the year that it is used. - Loan
forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps
will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable). - Basic
medical insurance (covers Members only, not dependents). - Child care
allowance for those who qualify. - May be
eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). - Professional
development, trainings and networking opportunities. - $100
training fund available.
Transportation Information:
- Member will
have access to County vehicles. - Member
eligible for mileage reimbursement from the County for use of Member's
personal vehicle. - Member will
be provided a Trimet Pass.
