Position Overview

The Advocacy and Policy Associate will serve as a critical member of USGBC’s public affairs team, engaged in executing critical green building advocacy and policy projects, supporting research projects, and also participating in and supporting department-wide activities. These responsibilities involve engagement with internal and external stakeholders, project execution, policy research, and significant writing of a range of advocacy materials.

Specific Responsibilities

Advocacy responsibilities (approximately 50 percent on annual basis) include:

  • Write letters, articles, and other advocacy communications on both assigned topics and of his/her initiative
  • Conduct direct outreach to USGBC local community staff, USGBC members, business allies, advocates, and elected officials at all levels of government
  • Implement advocacy plans for particular projects, working with direction of team members
  • Use team systems to track advocacy activities

Green building research responsibilities (approximately 25 percent on annual basis) include:

  • Monitor and track key green building research, including market data, innovation, business case studies, and policies, by others, and prepare occasional articles or briefs
  • Assist team members with preparing draft requests for proposals, scopes, contracts, and similar documents to engage outside researchers
  • Support development of cooperative research projects with target academic institutions and nonprofit organizations
  • With supervision, support outside research projects such as by monitoring progress, providing data, reviewing draft output, informing internal stakeholders, etc.

Policy responsibilities (approximately 25 percent on annual basis) include:

  • Conduct green building policy research, including federal and state laws, rule makings, pending legislation and other public policies. Policy research could be specific to a particular bill or regulation, to a jurisdiction (e.g., finding current status of buildings policies in a target jurisdiction), or to a topic across multiple jurisdictions
  • Typically, policy research involves a combination of database and web searches and outreach by email and phone to knowledgeable individuals and the target jurisdiction
  • Evaluate policies and determine policy relevance and key features, develop critical comparative analyses and prepare accurate summaries
  • Develop proposed changes to bills and other draft policies to meet specified objectives
  • Write policy briefs and case studies
