The Rainforest Alliance (RA) is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.

Position Summary:

The Accounting Manager will be responsible for general accounting oversight and management of the daily functions of accounting: payroll, A/P, G/L, cash management, financial systems, and field office reporting. S/he will monitor and analyze the financial performance of the organization to ensure that it is meeting its budgetary targets; identify financial opportunities; provide relevant financial data in a timely manner to empower the organization to meet financial goals and improve performance; and work with program heads to manage the financial aspects of the programs and advise them on how to best allocate the financial resources in order to maximize effectiveness and ensure program sustainability. S/he will supervise four (4) accounting staff members.

Responsibilities:

• Manage the accuracy of daily banking and cash reporting;
• Manage foreign exchange transactions;
• Supervise AP/AR, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of accounting entries;
• Manage all aspects of payroll processing;
• Oversee the maintenance of the G/L including preparation of bank reconciliations;
• Ensure monthly G/L closings are completed timely and accurately;
• Responsibility for the timely preparation and review of financial reporting as required;
• Monthly reconciliation of Balance Sheet accounts;
• Oversee the preparation and review of audit work papers;
• Communicate with corporate offices to ensure timely resolution of accounting issues;
• Provide fiscal problem resolution assistance; and
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:

• BA in Accounting/Finance; MA or CPA preferred;
• Minimum 5-7 years relevant experience; non-profit sector experience a plus;
• Ability to manage multiple programs and contracts;
• Significant prior experience managing professional staff in a fiscal environment;
• Effective oral and written communication skills;
• Proficiency with accounting system software, expertise in Excel and report writing software; Solomon experience a plus;
• Spanish language skills a plus; and
• Proven ability to work collegially with staff and management in sensitive, performance driven environments.
