Position Overview
We are looking for a Remote Sensing Engineer/Scientist with a good mathematical/scientific background that wants to bring those skills into the wind energy remote sensing industry. Based at our Seattle WA office, you will report to Vaisala Energy Manager of Data Services, and become the team’s expert on the remote sensing techniques, especially sodar (Triton), as used in the wind industry.
You will be responsible for investigating and analyzing Triton performance by various means, including applying principles of remote sensing and meteorology to understand why the data exhibit patterns of behavior; performing rigorous comparisons between data sets from masts and remote sensing devices using statistical techniques; and examining Triton data in its most raw form to understand non-optimal behavior. You will also interact with the Triton development team to contribute to future improvements in Triton performance.
The role will involve opportunities for travel, and for direct interaction with our clients all over the world. There will be involvement in groups defining best practice in the industry such as IEC and IEA. Vaisala is committed to developing its cutting-edge scientific solutions for the wind industry, providing opportunities for peer-reviewed publication and participation in leading conferences and technical meetings.
Responsibilities
- Hands-on involvement in measurement campaign planning and remote sensing data management and quality control.
- Analysis and comparison of remote sensing datasets and tower based datasets in various data formats.
- Analysis of Remote Sensing Triton installations using Windographer, Excel and other software tools.
- Use correlation analysis and physical models to contribute to development of algorithms to improve performance.
- Provide support on R&D activities in a wide variety of topics including wind resource, turbulence, power curves.
- Take a lead role with preparation of reports to clients (external and internal), communicate and defend results to clients, and perform client training courses.
Qualifications
- Degree in scientific area preferred.
- Excellent mathematical ability.
- Highly computer literate with working knowledge of MS Office suite.
- Experience with higher level scientific tools (e.g. Python sci-kit learn) and/or equivalent computer programming experience (e.g. Python).
- Knowledge of wind energy technology, databases, remote sensing and signal processing.
- 2-3 years previous experience in a Wind Engineer role.
- 2-3 years previous experience with wind energy measurement.
- 1-3 years previous experience with remote sensing, especially sodar.
