~ The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is the state government agency created by the General Assembly in 1947 to conserve and sustain the state’s fish and wildlife resources through research, scientific management, wise use, and public input.  The Commission is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of N.C. fishing, hunting, trapping and boating laws. ~

The sale of hunting and fishing licenses, federal grants and other receipts provide financial support of the agency.  The Commission has an operational budget of approximately $65 million and employs over 590 full-time men and women across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife officers, conservation educators, and public information, customer service, information technology, and administrative professionals.

NC Wildlife Resource Commission has an opening for a Troy Conservation Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Primary work responsibility involves assisting with habitat development on game lands, general maintenance of Public Boating Access Areas, Aids to Navigation and Fishing Areas, and assistance to agency programs conducting various wildlife and fishery surveys as designated by the Wildlife Resources Commission.
  • A considerable amount of work will consist of operating farm tractors, crawler tractors, mowers and other heavy equipment and trucks.
  • Applicant must be willing to operate this type of equipment.
  • This employee participates in work to enhance wildlife populations through cultural practices to restore or improve native habitat.
  • A considerable amount of time will be involved with prescribed burning, managing wildlife openings, creating early successional habitat, restoring altered ecosystems and waterfowl habitat management. Infrastructure-related duties will include but are not limited to maintenance of roads, dikes, trails, game land boundary, docks, piers, navigation aids and parking areas.
  • This position will remove existing degraded structures and prepare new sites and subgrades.
  • This position will repair decking or structural support replacement to docks, repair concrete walkways and ramps, form-work, casting steel reinforcement concrete abutments, set pilings and carpentry associated with frame and deck fabrication and assembly.
  • Duties also include participation in the development of work plans, maintenance of records, assisting with wildlife surveys, and general maintenance of equipment and facilities while under the direction of the Wildlife Technician Supervisor.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of equipment and vehicles used in wildlife management and BAA maintenance and construction.
  • Construction skills.
  • Communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with crew members, other staff, cooperating agencies and organizations, and the general public.
  • Ability to utilize personal computers to complete a variety of job assignments.
  • Ability to operate GPS, survey and weather equipment and associated GIS software.
  • Ability to operate a wide variety of equipment to include agricultural machinery, large commercial highway vehicles w/trailers, heavy equipment, ATVs, fire pumper units, watercraft, chainsaws, welder, 2-way radios, power hand tools and shop tools, as well as traditional hand and mechanical tools.
  • Ability to read blueprints and build from plans.
  • Ability to use survey equipment to set grades for construction.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduation from a 2 year technical college with an Associate Degree in wildlife or fisheries management or construction management and 2 years of experience which has included the management of wildlife or fisheries resources or the operation of heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must hold a current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or be able to obtain it within 6 months of employment.
  • Must hold an NCDA Pesticide Applicator's License or be able to obtain it within 6 months of employment.

Compensation: Salary will be based on budget, education, experience and equity. Salary Grade 63 Hiring Range $30,856.00 - $46,878.00.
