Description

~ Since its early days in Somers, New York, The Nature of Things has been a family-based animal and nature educational program housed at the Mumford home. ~

For more than 30 years, the family’s home in North Salem, New York has provided shelter and care to over 160 live animals.  Following several trial sites, such as the kitchen and a bedroom, the ground-level floor of the Sugar Hill house became The Nature of Things office, reptile room, and mammal/bird room following a series of renovations to accommodate the variety of living creatures.

An outdoor area houses the rabbit and poultry barns. Various species of reptiles, mammals, amphibians, insects, fish, birds, arachnids and more are lovingly cared for by professionally trained animal curators and veterinarians. As required by law, federal and state inspections take place annually, and periodic improvements are provided for in a timely manner.

The educational staff includes office personnel and professional educators who work under the direction of Dr. Deborah Mumford. The Nature of Things continues to thrive after more than 35 years, and offers thanks to the many educators who have shared their love of science and nature with our audiences.
