Description
~ North Branch Nature Center connects people with environmental education, natural history, and citizen science. More than 10,000 people visit NBNC to be in touch with the sights, sounds, and sensations of the natural world. ~
Our 28-acre preserve of forest and fields is nestled in a gentle bend of the North Branch of the Winooski River, just two miles from downtown Montpelier. NBNC is the delight in the eyes of children as they watch fireflies in a field. NBNC is a group of naturalists exploring the secrets of warblers and willows. And it's a quiet place to walk or ski, swim or sit, or simply relax beside the river.
Position Overview
- North Branch Nature Center is seeking qualified individuals to teach and lead campers ages 4 to 14 during our 2019 summer camp season.
- Dates of Employment: 5 days of mandatory staff training, June 17th- 21st. Camp begins June 24th and the ends on August 16th.
Responsibilities
- Responsibilities include teaching lessons in natural history and field studies as well as leading group games, arts and crafts, sensory awareness activities, storytelling and singing.
- As part of the camp staff team, you will also serve as a mentor to Counselors in Training.
- All staff will participate in a 5 day pre-camp staff training. As a staff member at NBNC, you hold a position of great responsibility for the success of our summer day camp programs.
- Your warmth, enthusiasm, willingness to share knowledge, and sensitivity to the needs of each camper profoundly influences every day of camp.
- We are looking for staff prospects that not only fulfill these criteria, but also have a genuine love for nature and the outdoors.
Qualifications
- At least 18 years of age.
- BS or BA degree, some undergraduate coursework and experience, and/or extensive life experience in teaching/instructing in an outdoor environment.
- Willingness to serve as a mentor to campers as well as Counselors In Training.
- Experience communicating with parents and caregivers.
- Experience in childhood education, environmental education and/or a science background.
- Patient, energetic, fun-loving, hardworking, and a sense of humor.
- Experience in time management, planning a schedule, and working out logistics.
- Ability to maintain a positive and appropriate attitude as well as highest morale character around children and staff at all times.
- Flexibility, ability to work well with others and maintain open and effective communication.
- Minimum of Red Cross certification in standard first aid and CPR.
Compensation
- $12.50 per hour, 40 hours per week, 9 total weeks.
