Position Overview

The Natural Land Management Technician works up to 40 work hours weekly from late March until October. Intern/Employee is expected to work some evenings and weekends, other weekday hours are flexible. County vehicle is provided for use during work hours. Preferred starting date is March 2019, but we will consider individuals who cannot begin until May due to school commitments.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Conservation Biologist to conduct natural resource inventories and ecological restoration in Park System natural areas.
  • Work with the Park Program Specialist, Park Supervisors, Park Foremen and Conservation Biologist to actively recruit volunteer groups and develop natural land management and/or citizen science work projects for those groups. The candidate will help execute these projects in the field either alone or in a group in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Develop work plans to finish tasks within a given time frame, design plans, including tool and supply coordination, and alternate dates or plans for inclement weather.
  • Work with the Conservation Biologist and Park Naturalists to train and coordinate citizen science volunteers for wildlife research in Park System natural areas.
  • Develop job descriptions for tasks and projects that can be accomplished by volunteers.
  • Serve as Crew Leader for volunteer projects, having a cheery welcoming disposition while greeting groups on site, giving instructions on project details, monitoring work from start to finish, cleaning up afterwards and providing a summary of work accomplished to Park staff.
  • Attend bi-weekly Ecology Team Meetings on Monday afternoons.
  • Maintain records of natural land management project accomplishments, equipment inventory, volunteer records, Waukesha County forms, timesheets, regular email correspondence, recognition certificate mailings, project lists, etc.
  • In conjunction with staff, plan your time between volunteer groups and create an active helpful schedule, and be willing to help parks staff with everyday maintenance tasks as needed.

Qualifications

Education:

  • This is a professional internship; applicant should be a current student or recent graduate with a degree in Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, Conservation or related field.

Abilities:

  • Work independently on projects, as well as with individual volunteers and/or groups.
  • Be able to read and understand the Natural Land Management Plans for Waukesha County Park System natural areas.
  • Plant identification skills are desired.
  • Pesticide applicators license (Right-of-ways & Natural Areas 6.0) is desired.
  • Experience in the operation of power tools / equipment is desired.
  • Possess a valid Driver's License.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to a schedule that may change weekly, and a willingness to be helpful in various areas of the parks.
