Description

~ At The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), more than 800 environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people’s relationship with the planet. ~

CIRES is a partnership of NOAA and the University of Colorado Boulder, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at the Earth’s poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, and solid Earth sciences. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.

Chemical Sciences Division:

Our mission is to advance scientific understanding of three major environmental and societal issues of our time: climate, air quality, and stratospheric ozone layer through atmospheric research on the chemical and related physical processes that affect Earth’s atmospheric composition.

Our vision of the future is a nation that has the needed scientific understanding and information about our atmosphere (environmental intelligence) to make optimal decisions in the interests of the well being of current and future generations. Integral to CSD's work is ensuring that governments, the public, and industry can access our scientific findings. We provide explanations of our research in user-friendly, policy-relevant formats, which may be used to help develop informed decisions. CSD's work to advance the scientific understanding of atmospheric chemical processes is essential for understanding and predicting changes in Earth's environment – the heart of NOAA's mission.

Position Overview

CIRES at the University of Colorado at Boulder is seeking a research scientist 1 to study radiative, chemical, and dynamical processes in the upper troposphere and stratosphere. The successful applicant will work in the U. S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – Earth System Research Laboratory/Chemical Sciences Division (NOAA ESRL/CSD).

Within this Division, the researcher will work closely with a team of federal and CIRES scientists to assess the global impact of past and potential future anthropogenic perturbations to the stratosphere (e.g., due to ozone depleting substances, rockets, and supersonic transport), as well as the processes controlling variability of stratospheric water vapor and ozone from interannual to decadal time scales.

We seek an individual with demonstrated expertise in large-scale atmospheric modeling, including modifying code as well as running community models, and the statistical analysis of global data sets (including model archives). Familiarity with stratospheric processes controlling ozone and water vapor as well as connections between stratosphere and troposphere is beneficial. Familiarity with atmospheric aerosol processes is also beneficial. The ability to work well with other researchers and support staff in a collaborative research environment is essential. The applicant should have experience both in writing papers for the peer-reviewed literature and presenting his/her research at scientific meetings. A PhD in the field of atmospheric science, environmental science, chemistry, physics or the equivalent is required.

The initial term of the appointment is for one year, with a possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.

Responsibilities

  • Study radiative, chemical, and dynamical processes in the upper troposphere and stratosphere.
  • Work closely with a team of federal and CIRES scientists to assess the global impact of past and potential future anthropogenic perturbations to the stratosphere (e.g., due to ozone depleting substances, rockets, and supersonic transport), as well as the processes controlling variability of stratospheric water vapor and ozone from interannual to decadal time scales.

Qualifications

What We Require:

  • PhD in Atmospheric Sciences or a related field.
  • Programming experience, in particular making modifications to global chemistry climate models.
  • Background in data analysis and statistics.
  • Knowledge of atmospheric dynamics and radiative transfer.
  • Experience in manipulating large datasets (including model output).

What You Will Need:

  • Excellent organizational skills and logical thinking ability.
  • Ability to work as a team member in data analysis and interpretation of results.

Compensation

  • We can offer a competitive salary, commensurate with experience along with a very generous benefits package.

Benefits:

  • The University of Colorado offers excellent benefits, including medical, dental, retirement, paid time off, tuition benefit and ECO Pass.
  • The University of Colorado Boulder is one of the largest employers in Boulder County and offers an inspiring higher education environment.
