Headquartered in Moreland Hills, Ohio, we are the largest land conservancy in Ohio, employing over 40 people in offices throughout northern and eastern portions of the state. Our land protection team has now conserved more than 52,000 acres of natural area and working farms in 23 Ohio counties. Thriving Communities, our urban revitalization program, is nationally recognized for thought leadership on removing blight; creating land banks to find productive uses for vacant properties; and revitalizing communities through greening strategies. Our mission is funded through a combination of program revenue, government grants, and philanthropic gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations.

Position Overview

Western Reserve Land Conservancy has an immediate opening for a Conservation Project Manager. This full-time position is located at the organization’s Conservation Center at 3850 Chagrin River Road, Moreland Hills, Ohio 44022.

The Conservation Project Manager (CPM) is primarily responsible for creating and implementing land protection project work plans, which include timelines, budgets, and funding schedules. Overall conservation team goals include increasing the number of acres preserved, with a focus on maximizing high priority acres; facilitating program support revenue from the completion of land protection transactions; and achieving concurrence with targeted conservation players throughout the region. The CPM directly supports those goals by effectively coordinating multiple land protection transactions. This person collaborates closely with project team members along with field, funding, and legal staff to identify, structure, manage, fund, and close land protection transactions.

Responsibilities

Land Protection, Managing Project Work Plans:

  • The CPM is responsible for managing complex land protection project work plans, including the timelines, budgets, and funding schedules.
  • The CPM takes a lead role in prioritizing, structuring, and executing transactions that benefit conservation, communities, partners, and the Land Conservancy.
  • To accomplish this, the CMP coordinates and participates in the full range of project-related activities, including anticipating and tracking deadlines and requirements, maintaining accurate records, collaborating with partners, and coordinating activities across multiple teams and multiple projects.
  • The CPM is also responsible for management of specific sites, including managing contractors for site management/development and/or restoration needs.
  • The CPM collaborates closely with conservation, field, legal, and stewardship staff to ensure timely and high quality project completion.

Collaboration and Relationship Management with Targeted Partners:

  • Recognizing we will not achieve our visionary outcomes alone, the strategic plan tasks the Land Conservancy with working in concurrence with targeted conservation partners.
  • Collaboration with partners is an important element of the conservation project management process.
  • The CPM interacts regularly with partnering organizations, such as other nonprofits, various levels of local government, state agencies and federal agencies.
  • The CPM may act as the primary interface in these project relationships and is responsible for managing them to successfully execute land protection transactions.

Related Conservation Activities:

  • The CPM is responsible for carrying out related activities to ensure the successful execution of land protection transactions.
  • These may include coordinating, writing and administering grants for public funding, creating maps in GIS and supporting knowledge sharing efforts.
  • This person may be involved in other activities as needed, including participation in Land Conservancy outreach events.

Culture, Communication, and Continuous Improvement:

  • Along with all staff members, the CPM is responsible for contributing to a positive organizational culture by providing strong communications, living the Land Conservancy values, and demonstrating a willingness to collaborate, learn and develop.
  • The CPM is also responsible for performing in a manner that is professional, collaborative, timely, and of high quality.
  • This person is expected to pursue continuous learning about conservation, real estate, project management, and related issues.

Qualifications

  • This person should have 3 to 5 years of work experience, preferably in land conservation or project management.
  • Experience with real estate transactions is preferred, as is some background or experience with GIS.
  • The candidate must be highly energetic with a track record of implementing plans, managing competing deadlines, and achieving goals, and an understanding of project management best practices is desirable.
  • This person must demonstrate strong organizational and detail management skills, an ability to work independently, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and must possess strong analytical, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • This person must be willing to travel throughout the region.
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Land Conservancy’s mission is essential.
