Position Overview

The Department of Geology and Environmental Science at James Madison University seeks applications for a climate or paleoclimate scientist at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level to begin August 2019.

The Department has 17 full-time faculty, 3 part-time lecturers, and 2 staff members. The degree options we currently offer are a BS in Geology, a BA in Earth Science, and minors in Geology and in Geophysics. Our curriculum has a strong foundation in core geoscience courses, a wide range of upper division electives, opportunities for international study, and emphases on field study and on undergraduate research.

We recently (August 2018) moved into new teaching and laboratory space in the College of Science and Mathematics. More information about the department can be found here. Information on existing equipment housed in the Department can be found here.

Responsibilities

  • We seek a colleague who is committed to excellence in teaching and in research involving undergraduate students, and who will develop and maintain an active and broadly interdisciplinary Neogene climate or paleoclimate research program that bridges the ancient to human timescale.
  • Teaching responsibilities will include introductory courses in climate science, and meteorology, as well as other geoscience and general education science courses.
  • In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a new upper division interdisciplinary course related to climate science.
  • Collaborations are encouraged with faculty in the Department and in other STEM fields.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in a related field is required at the time of employment.
  • The successful candidate will provide evidence of their ability to work within a collaborative scholarly environment, and will be expected to work with faculty in the Geology and Environmental Science Department to strengthen and expand our course and research offerings.
