~ To conserve and preserve the natural resources of Lake County while providing a variety of safe, affordable and enjoyable educational and recreational programs and activities that enhance the quality of life in Lake County now and for the generations to follow. ~

The Lake County Probate Court Judge, Mark J. Bartolotta, appoints a three-member board of citizens to govern Lake Metroparks. Lake Metroparks Board of Park Commissioners Gretchen Skok DiSanto, Frank J. Polivka and John C. Redmond serve, without compensation, for three-year alternating terms. In March of each year, the Board of Park Commissioners appoints an Executive Director who serves as the Chief Executive Officer for the park district. The current Executive Director is Paul Palagyi.

Position Overview

Under supervision of Interpretive Manager, the Interpretive Naturalist plans, presents, and evaluates interpretive programs and activities for families, adults and active senior citizens on natural and cultural history topics at our Penitentiary Glen Nature Center. Hours: 16 to 28 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Other duties include but are not limited to, leading trail hikes on Tuesdays and Saturdays which vary in intensity and are 2 to 6 miles in length during all weather conditions.
  • Other duties include working cooperatively on projects and special events.
  • Assist with front desk duties and other naturalist duties. 

Qualifications

  • Must be able to work cooperatively with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to stimulate interest and excitement about program subject and the park district in visitors and other staff.
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, environmental education, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Must be familiar with computer systems.
  • Must be able to life fifty (50) pounds, bend, stoop, and lift.
  • Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license and insurable under Agency’s policy.

  • Ability to write and speak in a clear, concise manner, ability to work with people in a pleasant, enthusiastic and appropriate manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with public speaking.
  • Creative, flexible, and well organized.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a high paced environment.
  • Able to work quickly, efficiently and calmly under stressful conditions.
