The Institute's mission is to cultivate a responsibility for the natural environment and our human communities through interdisciplinary science education. We achieve this goal through innovative marine science education programs that:

  • Place students of all ages in direct contact with the natural environment;
  • Emphasize the interdependence of all living things, their connection to the physical environment, and the special responsibilities of humans to the environment; 
  • Facilitate active learning through the use of observation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in a cooperative setting, and 
  • Instill confidence, encourage involvement, and inspire accomplishment by providing positive role models. 

Position Overview

  • The Institute is seeking qualified marine educators to teach programs to students of all ages.
  • MSI is located in Redwood City, CA on the San Francisco Bay.

Responsibilities

  • Present science curriculum through inquiry based learning and hands-on activities.
  • Teach school, public, membership, and birthday programs that are presented at MSI's facility, bay area schools, educational events and other outdoor facilities.
  • Provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Properly handle live aquatic organisms and artifacts.
  • Maintain educational equipment, company vehicles and facility grounds.
  • Continuously update their knowledge of Marine Ecology, Ichthyology, Plankton, Benthic Ecology, Physical Oceanography and current events of the San Francisco Bay Estuary and the Pacific Ocean.

Qualifications

  • Formal degree (Marine Biology, Education, or related field) or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in teaching and/or public speaking.
  • Must be physically fit, able to lift heavy equipment, stand for long periods and work outdoors in a wet and muddy environment.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

Compensation

  • This seasonal position has fixed work days (including Saturdays) and averages 30-40 hours per week.
  • Starting pay rate is $15.50/hr. This position is open until filled.
  • Educational |Seasonal (September - December), 30-40 hours per week.
