~ Established in 1922, Catalina Island Camps (CIC) operates a summer resident kids camp for boys and girls in 1st through 10th grade and is the home of the Jean-Michel Cousteau Family Camp and the school year Catalina Environmental Leadership Program (CELP). ~
Our overnight summer kids camp by the ocean offers kids the chance to unplug from their busy, over-connected lives, connect to their peers, and our staff of young adult role models and discover their strengths as they explore the outdoors. The southern California camp is located at Howlands Landing on Catalina Island, 22 miles from Los Angeles. Catalina Island Camps is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and is a member of the Western Association of Independent Camps (WAIC).
The Catalina Environmental Leadership Program is an environmental education program for students in 4th through 12th grade. CELP is a partnership between Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society and Catalina Island Camps. Our location on the beautiful west end of Catalina Island in southern California allows us to teach lessons on ecology and sustainability while snorkeling in the kelp forest, kayaking, hiking, teambuilding, and organic gardening. CELP operates a spring and a fall program. Summer job opportunities are also available at our resident summer camp.
Position Overview
We are looking for a qualified Environmental Education Instructor to lead groups of 10 to 15 students on week-long environmental education programs. CELP activities include day and night snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, ropes course, microscope lab, organic gardening, composting, campfires, astronomy, art in nature, tide-pooling, and sustainable living lessons. Responsibilities include lesson planning, preparing program areas, leading day and evening activities, and attending staff meetings. CELP instructors live and work at the camp for the duration of the season. We are currently hiring for our spring season.
Dates of Employment: Our fall seasons runs from August 28 to November 16, 2018.
Qualifications
- CELP instructors must have a Bachelor's degree in a natural or environmental science or a related field, however significant experience in camps and/or education field will be considered. Instructors must also possess strong water skills, a commitment to environmental stewardship, and the ability to work with staff and students of all ages.
- Instructors must complete Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard, CPR, and First-aid Certifications, which are offered by CELP at the start of the season.
- Staff must have strong leadership skills, be able to contribute to a small community of educators, and thrive in a rustic, outdoor setting.
Compensation
- Salary: $75/day, starting plus full room and board for the duration of the season.
- Housing: provided full-time; shared cabins with ocean or canyon views.
- Meals: provided full-time; vegetarian and non-vegetarian options available.
