Description
1) Conduct and possibly establish census routes for butterflies.
2) Conduct vegetation surveys and other research activities as needed.
3) Assist with habitat enhancement research and land management activities.
4) Write a detailed field report summarizing work activities, and possibly also assist in locating and compiling existing information into reports.
4) He/She may participate in other aspects of the conservation for the rare regal fritillary butterfly, including work with GPS/GIS technology and statistical packages and coordination of seed collection programs.
Contract funding is currently available for this position through August 31, 2002. There is the possibility of extending this position depending upon availability of funding.
DUTIES:
1) Conduct and possibly establish census routes for the regal fritillary butterfly.
2) Identify and survey all potential regal fritillary habitats to determine the presence or absence of the species, and identify other areas of research needed for the conservation of this rare butterfly.
3) Conduct vegetation surveys in grasslands.
4) Assist in habitat enhancement and stewardship activities such as invasive plant and tree removal and boundary posting.
5) Maintain detailed field reports on work activities. Perform data entry into spreadsheet programs.
6) Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Manager.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
1) B.S. Degree in biology, zoology, ecology or related field or 2 years of work towards a degree and/or related experience in natural area land management.
2) Ability to accurately identify the regal fritillary butterfly in flight at a distance using binoculars and record its behavior while walking a census route, or the ability and willingness to learn.
3) Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
4) Knowledge of Pennsylvania flora and prior experience with invertebrates preferred.
5) Ability to take detailed and accurate field notes.
6) Ability to locate transects and sampling units using maps, compass, and aerial photography.
7) Ability to complete tasks within assigned timeframes, frequently in the absence of supervision.
8) Experience or ability to safely use and maintain preserve tools and equipment.
9) Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
10) Current certification in First Aid & CPR a plus.
11) Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and experience utilizing databases for data entry and report production. Experience using GPS and/or GIS a plus.
12) Ability and willingness to work flexible hourly and weekly schedules; and to work in cooperation with FTIG training and military personnel.
13) Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to use own vehicle with compensation.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS:
1) May resolve preserve management problems independently as delegated.
Consult with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of unusual or complex problems.
2) Ability to prioritize tasks in the absence of specific instructions.
Monitor the progress of work groups toward achieving preserve management goals.
3) Make day-to-day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
4) Consult with supervisor in event of any unusual circumstance, problem or question that falls outside of specific instructions given.
5) Ability to convey work instructions to other preserve management team members, including volunteers.
6) Ability to use radios for communication or willingness and ability to learn.
7) Ability to interact with preserve visitors and to convey basic preserve information.
8) Ability to work efficiently and effectively alone and as a member of a team, both in the field and in the office.
9) Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on difficult and sometimes hazardous terrain. Work environment involves exposure to areas with snakes and high tick densities.
