Education Support Specialist

Position Overview

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is currently hiring an Education Spport Specialist I (Park Interpreter).

Responsibilities

• Research, develop, promote and present programs for a variety of age groups including guided hikes, canoe and kayak tours, wildlife programs, historical/cultural programs, campfires, children’s programs and other environmental education, recreation activities and outdoor skills.
• Assist in staffing the camp store and the Visitor Center.
• May be required to perform park related duties as needed during emergencies or on a non-recurring basis, as well as other duties as assigned.
• Must provide be willing to work a flexible schedule to include weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

• One year of college with a major or minor study in a natural sciences or history desirable.
• Have a basic knowledge of Virginia’s flora and fauna and the ability to plan, organize and conduct tours and programs featuring them.
• Familiarity with outdoor survival skills and paddling techniques helpful.
• Must be comfortable with public speaking and providing excellent customer service to the general public.
• Familiarity with accepted American Red Cross First Aid procedures desirable.
• Requires standing, bending and walking in the outdoors exposed to the elements.
• Reliable transportation and a valid Virginia driver’s license required.

Additional Information

• All positions are seasonal/wage positions. No benefits are associated with wage positions.
• Positions are limited to a maximum of 1500 hours per calendar year and requires frequent weekend and holiday work.
• Employment in all positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check.
