The mission of the Division of Forestry, Horticulture and Natural Resources (FHNR) is to protect, restore, expand and manage New York City’s natural spaces and green infrastructure to maximize their benefits and promote their value within and outside of the urban ecosystem.  The Greenbelt Native Plant Center (GNPC) is the Division’s native plant nursery and regional seed bank.

Position Overview

New York City Parks is seeking a Deputy Director of the Greenbelt Native Plant Center.

Responsibilities

  • Under direction of the GNPC Director, coordinate closely with the Nursery Manager to ensure the smooth day-to-day operations of the 12-acre site and its 5 programmatic areas.
  • Oversee the operation of the GNPC office, including supervision of office staff and issues relating to personnel, timekeeping, purchasing and receiving.

Qualifications

  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time experience in the appropriate field of specialization, including one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above.   However, all candidates must have a master’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative, or research capacity as described in “2” above.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree from an accredited university with specialization in environmental sciences, horticulture or a related subject;
  • Strong knowledge of agency structure and divisions and/or government operations;
  • Excellent writing, supervisory, administrative and interpersonal skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Access; and
  • Valid New York State driver license.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over 2 years of city service; and
  • New York City residency required for all other candidates.

Compensation: $70,286 - $80,000 plus excellent benefits.
