Description

~ Blue Hill Heritage Trust (BHHT) is a nationally accredited nonprofit, membership-based land conservation organization founded, in 1985, by residents of the Blue Hill Peninsula in coastal Maine. ~

We work to conserve the unique landscape of our peninsula: pristine shores, blueberry-covered hills, working farms, wetlands, forests, ponds, and breathtaking views. Our mission is to conserve in perpetuity land and water resources that support the long-term health and well-being of the natural and human communities on the Blue Hill Peninsula.

Position Overview

Blue Hill Heritage Trust is looking for an energetic and dedicated forester/forest ecologist to join our stewardship staff. The Trust has recently acquired a 2100-acre forest block, which it will use for education, research, and long-term conservation forest management. We are in the process of adding another 2000-acre block to our holdings.

Both these parcels have been logged hard in the recent past, and we are looking for someone with the skills and vision to begin the process of rehabilitation. The goal is to manage for long-term ecological health, wildlife habitat, and sustainable forest products. We very much want these forests to be part of our educational outreach, and we are seeking a person who is interested in teaching people about forests and forest management, as well as practicing these things.

This position will also be involved in the stewardship of the Trusts other fee properties and easements. The responsibilities for this part of the job will include helping with monitoring, boundary work, trail management, and other related tasks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forestry (Master’s preferred)
  • One to three years of field experience in forestry – Chainsaw certified
  • Effective communication skills – Strong oral and interpersonal skills, as well as writing proficiency
  • Good computer skills in most elements of Microsoft Office, use of GIS
  • Must be ready to work strenuous days outdoors year-round in all weather conditions
  • Experience with machinery (tractor, brush hog, mowers, etc.) carpentry skills a plus

Compensation

  • Salary commensurate with experience and demonstrated skills
  • Benefits include medical, 401K, paid vacation, sick and personal leave
  • Professional memberships and training encouraged and paid for by the Trust
