Position Overview

The Outdoor Environmental Education Program is seeking a permanent, full-time, year-round, Outdoor Education Specialist for our Caleb Smith Outdoor Learning Laboratory, located on the north shore of Long Island, New York. To learn more about our programs visit our website.

  • Location: Caleb Smith Outdoor Learning Lab, Smithtown, NY 11787
  • Reports To: Program Coordinator, Outdoor Environmental Education Program

Responsibilities

Instruction:

  • Day Use
    • Daily environmental instruction in an outdoor setting
    • Work with multiple classes per day at the Caleb Smith site
    • Training parents before classes arrive
    • Planning outdoor and environmental education program with teachers
  • Special Services
    • Plan and lead authentic field science programs
    • Off-site education programs, including interpretive canoeing programs, as needed
    • Both outdoor and classroom programs
    • Science support for districts and WSB Special Education Elementary Schools
  • Provide Professional Development
    • Plan and implement an annual teacher in-service course
    • Plan and implement custom teacher in-service trainings in coordination with participating districts
    • Provide internal staff workshops
    • Ensure safe practices for all education programs (preparation/planning)

Lab Operations:

  • Maintain Caleb Smith Outdoor Learning Lab and associated buildings. Responsible for upkeep of facilities both personally and working with Parks Department, Internal BOCES staff, and Program Coordinator in maintaining a safe, clean and organized workplace
  • Budgets and Purchase Requisitions
  • Ensure working order of all equipment
  • Maintain live animal exhibits and ensure ethical and humane care of animals
  • Create and maintain educational displays

Other:

  • To work as a member of a team, including networking with colleagues, staff, volunteers, State Parks, BOCES, SCOPE, teachers, science coordinators and field trip sites
  • To conduct other various activities, such as, grant writing, curriculum development and program evaluation
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Program Coordinator

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Biology, Environmental Science or related field
  • A minimum of 2 years related experience in field science education
  • Responsible individual able to interact with teachers and students in a professional manner
  • Well-organized, capable of maintaining high efficiency while planning and teaching in numerous programs and maintaining upkeep of lab facility and environs
  • Working knowledge of NYS P-12 Science Learning Standards and classroom curriculum preferred
