The good work we do on campus is designed to help promote the conservation of Florida’s coastal ecosystems and help protect threatened and endangered sea turtles. LMC is one of the most visited Cultural destination in Palm Beach County and in 2016 LMC’s beach-side campus and pier attracted over 300,000 visitors nearly half of whom were from outside of Palm Beach County.

Our core focus areas are: education, research, ocean conservation and sea turtle rehabilitation and our campus is widely known for our world class sea turtle hospital, our cutting edge sea turtle research, our sea-side themed gift boutique, and our very popular public and signature events.

Position Overview

In collaboration with the Center’s Chief Conservation Officer, the Conservation Coordinator is responsible for the creation and implementation of Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s conservation initiatives, both on campus and around the world. The incumbent will build and maintain relationships with organizations and individuals living and operating businesses in vital sea turtle habitat and work to implement solutions for various threats sea turtles face in diverse global locations.

Supervisor: Reports directly to the Chief Conservation Officer

Responsibilities

  • Identify areas and organizations in need of sea turtle conservation projects around the world
  • Research laws, policies, scientific literature, culture, history, and attitudes regarding sea turtle conservation in said locations
  • Establish and maintain conservation partnerships
  • Lead educational workshops
  • Design, deliver, and distribute resources such as signage, educational materials, and monitoring, rescue, and rehabilitation equipment
  • Capture footage and manage photo and video database of conservation initiatives
  • Collect data from conservation initiatives
  • Manage LMC and partner organizations’ monofilament collections and shipments for recycling
  • Submit abstracts and share conservation strategies at integral conservation conferences
  • Produce and strive to publish papers summarizing findings with critical management or policy implications
  • Implement and analyze LMC’s Campus Sustainability Initiative
  • Improve sustainability of LMC campus operations
  • Lead the Campus Sustainability Committee comprised of one staff representative from each LMC department
  • Track success of newly implemented protocols
  • Coordinate with LMC Research staff to gain knowledge of current trends in sea turtle population health
  • Coordinate with LMC Rehabilitation staff to gain knowledge of injuries, proper first responder protocols, medical procedures, and recovery time for sea turtles impacted by human activities
  • Coordinate with LMC Education staff to incorporate conservation messaging into school and public programs offered at LMC
  • Coordinate with LMC Operations staff to assist in clean-up activities, debris, recyclables, and compost collections
  • Coordinate with LMC Pier staff to monitor the Responsible Pier Initiative on the Juno Beach Pier
  • Hold regular trainings for Juno Beach Pier staff on sea turtle ecology, rescue, and data collection
  • Supply Juno Pier staff with sea turtle interaction data sheets
  • Replace sea turtle rescue equipment when necessary
  • Implement angler surveys on the pier regarding knowledge of and attitude towards proper sea turtle rescue protocol
  • In collaboration with CCO, oversee Juno Beach Pier underwater cleanup activities, manage and analyze data from debris removed
  • Coordinate with LMC Volunteer staff to educate volunteers on conservation initiatives and sustainable practices
  • Train volunteers to assist in conservation programs when applicable
  • Write for the LMC Conservation Blog
  • Coordinate annual Earth Day Beach Cleanup
  • Train and manage department interns
  • Regular check-ins with Project SHIELD partners to gain data and maintain relationships
  • Sorting, weighing, recording, and recycling or repurposing debris collected from cleanup activities
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant discipline
  • Experience developing practical solutions for the responsible management of protected resources
  • Knowledge of and experience with effectively communicating, both orally and in writing, with diverse audiences of various ages, skillsets, backgrounds, beliefs, circumstances, and cultures
  • Experience working with scientists, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, federal and state managers, commercial and recreational anglers, industry professionals, and the public
  • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally

Required Skills:

  • Proficient in MS Office, WordPress, text, photo, and video editing, social media platforms, email distributions
  • Database management
  • Statistical data analysis
  • Ability to summarize complex findings into concise reports and presentations that can be easily understood by diverse audiences
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with the scientific community, local communities, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and industry professionals
  • Public speaking abilities
  • Ability to communicate in both English and Spanish preferred
  • Advanced Open water SCUBA certification preferred

Exempt Status:

  • This position is classified as an exempt salaried status under the FLSA laws
  • The executive assistant is required to exercise independent judgment and discretion with respect to matters of significance and which directly relates to management and the general business operations of Loggerhead Marinelife Center

Introductory Period:

  • It is the policy of LMC that all team members, including newly hired, transferred and promoted team members, will be carefully monitored and evaluated for an initial introductory period on the job
  • After satisfactory completion of the introductory evaluation, such team members will be evaluated on an annual basis
