~ The Orange County Water District (OCWD) is an internationally recognized leader in the water industry and its international reach is growing. ~

OCWD takes the limited water supply found in nature and supplements it to provide water for 2.4 million people in Orange County, California. Since 1933, when the California State Legislature formed it, OCWD has been entrusted to guard the region's groundwater basin.  OCWD manages and replenishes the basin, ensures water reliability and quality, prevents seawater intrusion, and protects Orange County's rights to Santa Ana River water.

Position Overview

Under supervision, observes all safety procedures, performs routine and/or complex physical, chemical, analyses on water, wastewater, and related samples. Requires knowledge of current principles, practices and procedures in the field of environmental chemistry with an emphasis on organic analyses; knowledge of testing methods, analytical procedures, quality control, and laboratory safety. 

Schedule: 9/80 with every other Friday off. 7:00 am – 4:30 pm. However, must be able to work additional hours and weekends when required. 

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and operates analytical laboratory equipment. Uses networked LIMS system for reporting water quality data.
  • Experience on the use of computer data input and communication required.
  • Participates in applied research, method development, and investigative projects associated with analysis of water quality parameters.
  • Uses networked LIMS system for reporting water quality data.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, biology, or related field required; or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Chemistry major preferred.
  • At least two (2) years of prior experience in the drinking water/wastewater laboratory field is required, along with knowledge of EPA standard methods for the analysis of water/waste water and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) on quality control and quality assurance.
  • Must be familiar with operating a LIMS reporting system. 
  • Strongly prefer at least two (2) years of hands-on experience in Gas Chromatography (GC), Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Liquid Chromotagraphy Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS) or a combination to support volatile organic compound (VOC) analysis, other trace organic analysis, the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR) program, and other emerging contaminant monitoring programs.
  • The senior level position requires a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in these areas.
  • Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and maintain a variety of laboratory instruments including the GC, GC/MS, LC/MS and HPLC is desirable.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, provide needed technical support, and safely handle hazardous laboratory waste.
  • Must be able to work additional hours and weekends when required.

Compensation

  • Chemist: $34.85 - $43.56 per hour
  • Senior Chemist: $42.36 - $52.95 per hour
