The Energy Efficiency Campaign, launched last week, features a reprehensible new villainthe energy-wasting Energy Hogand includes public service announcements on television, radio, and the Internet. The Energy Efficiency Campaign currently targets children between the ages of eight and 13, but in future phases it will also target parents and teachers. The Advertising Council and Energy Outreach Colorado developed the Energy Hog and the campaign, and sponsors include DOE, The Home Depot, the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association, the National Fuel Funds Network, and 20 state energy offices. Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG), a leading provider of clean, reliable on-site energy, announced its GenCore fuel cell product is installed and is providing backup power to a remote cellular telecommunications tower in Elgin, Scotland. The project is a collaboration with Orange, one of the world's most fastest growing mobile communications companies; FDT Associates, provider of design and construction services for telecommunication sites throughout the UK and Northern Ireland; and BOC Group, one of the largest hydrogen gas suppliers in the world, serving two million customers in more than fifty countries. "We are delighted to be showcasing the very first hydrogen-powered mobile base station," said Ian Guthrie, Operations Manager for Orange in Scotland. "This breakthrough means we will be able to extend our network to new areas not presently covered. We are also pleased that we have been able to do this in a cost-effective way, while minimizing the environmental impact to the surrounding area." The cell site is situated in a forest, 1,500 feet above sea level at the Huntly Nordic Ski Center training site, and provides telecommunication coverage between Rhynie and Elgin. Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc., (Nasdaq: QTWW) announced that California's South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) has approved $2.3 million for Quantum to provide the engineering, design and development of advanced hydrogen fuel systems for a fleet of 30 Toyota Prius Hybrid Electric Vehicles. The value of the contract may be expanded to $2.5 million, contingent on co- funding by the Department of Defense National Automotive Center (DoD-NAC), which would increase the total number of vehicles to 35. Quantum will develop the complete OEM-level hydrogen internal combustion engine fuel system, including both the injection system and hydrogen storage system. Included in the fuel systems will be the company's patented fuel injectors, fuel rails, electronic control system and software, hydrogen storage and a customized turbocharger. Quantum will also integrate these hydrogen fuel systems into the vehicles and perform complete validation including crash testing, engine and vehicle durability, and emissions testing to ensure compliance. Quantum will offer the vehicles with two hydrogen storage configurations: Quantum's TriShield(R) compressed hydrogen storage system or an optional metal hydride storage system.
