Tiffany & Co. Stakes Out Bold Position on Responsible Mining

Today, in an open letter in the Washington Post, Tiffany & Co. called for protection of wilderness threatened by a silver mine, as well as reform of U.S. mining law regulating the industry that supplies it with gold, silver and platinum for its jewelry. Tiffany states that "opponents fears are justified" regarding the Rock Creek mine in a pristine Wilderness Area in Montana, a perfect example of why the 1872 Mining Law needs updating. This is the first time that a major jewelry company has taken a highly visible stance on U.S. law regulating mining. In his letter, Michael Kowalski, the Chairman and CEO of Tiffany & Co., called for the preservation of the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness Area and identified the 1872 Mining Law as encouraging mining in inappropriate areas. If constructed, the Rock Creek mine would tunnel under the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness Area, upstream from Idaho's Lake Pend Oreille. Some 60 Idaho panhandle businesses, as well as county commissioners and city council members, oppose the Rock Creek Mine. Under the 1872 Mining Law, the Forest Service claimed they had to allow the mine to tunnel underneath a Wilderness Area, potentially harming endangered grizzly bears and polluting precious water resources. Solar Trade Group Applauds New Jersey Clean Energy Initiatives

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) today praised as historic New Jerseys initiatives that could help it overtake California as the nations leading solar market. Last week, New Jersey finalized the nations best renewable energy portfolio standard (RPS) for solar power, which calls for 90 megawatts of solar by 2008. The states new RPS will continue the explosive growth launched by the states excellent consumer rebate program, which encourages homeowners, businesses and the public sector to deploy solar energy solutions, said Glenn Hamer, SEIAs Executive Director. New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey and NJ Board of Public Utilities President Jeanne M. Fox have led the Garden State to embrace solar and other clean energy technologies. Recognizing New Jerseys abundant, idle rooftops as a prime location to generate new power for the state, they have put in place a set of incentives that will help clean the states air while generating jobs for their constituents. The state is also developing a strong net metering law that will make it easy for solar users to connect to the grid and provide their excess electricity into the system. As New Jersey adopts these forward-thinking policies, Governor Schwarzenegger has promised to maintain Californias pro-solar […]
