BP has launched its Sustainability Report 2004 which covers the company’s business approach, environmental record and role in society. This year’s report is entitled ‘Making the right choices’. “Our purpose at BP is to provide energy products and services to customers around the world. We’ve been doing this for almost 100 years and want to continue doing so in future; responding to the world’s growing need for energy” said Lord Browne, group chief executive of BP. “To do this we have to work in ways that are sustainable, and to build mutually advantageous relationships with all those who are touched by our business”. The report is in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative Guidelines 2002 – a comprehensive set of indicators covering all aspects of sustainable development. The report also includes a view on how BP is seeking to demonstrate the United Nations Global Compact Principles in its work. Developed by companies, UN agencies and expert organizations, the principles cover human rights, labour, the environment and corruption. Carmanah Technologies Corporation (Vancouver:CMH.V – News) announced Friday that the Company’s recently opened European office in London, England has received a purchase order in the amount of $200,597 to provide the City of Edinburgh Council with its proprietary i-SHELTER(TM) solar LED (light-emitting diode) bus shelter lighting systems. Carmanah’s i-SHELTER(TM) lighting systems will be introduced across the Edinburgh public transport network by Commutaports Ltd., one of the UK’s largest suppliers of passenger shelters and modular covered walkways. “Edinburgh has discovered the potential of Carmanah’s solar LED lighting systems to enhance public transport travel at vastly reduced cost to the public purse,” states Carmanah’s CEO, Art Aylesworth. “Scotland is an extremely challenging solar power environment, but the performance and reliability of our technology resulted in our selection as the supplier of solar shelter lighting for the country’s capital city.” Edinburgh is currently investing in its public transport system under the Central Edinburgh Traffic Management Scheme. Increasing public transport use will help achieve goals of reduced traffic congestion and improved air quality set out in the National Air Quality Strategy.
