USCAR and U.S. DOE to Invest up to $195 Million in Lightweight Materials and Batteries Research

Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation and DaimlerChrysler Corporation, as members of the United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR), today signed cooperative research agreements with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support continued research and development in the areas of lightweight materials and advanced battery technologies for vehicles. The agreements, which include DOE funding and industry cost share, represent a total investment potential of $195 million over the next five years. Nearly all of the DOE funding will be passed via subcontracts to suppliers and research institutions through the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) and U.S. Automotive Materials Partnership (USAMP), both consortia of the USCAR. Today’s $125 million USABC agreement is set for three years with two, one-year continuing options in which the government and industry will share the costs of research. Combined with a $70 million USAMP agreement for lightweight, high-strength materials research, which was initially announced in May, the total joint investment potential in vehicle technologies is $195 million over the next five years. As part of the USABC agreement, the Department of Energy’s (DOE) FreedomCAR Program will split the cost of research and development for a number of new battery materials and technologies that have […]

DaimlerChrysler Delivers a Fuel Cell Vehicle to Michigan

Today, DaimlerChrysler and Inergy Automotive Systems made another achievement in fuel cell technology. Inergy became the first Michigan F-Cell customer since the DOE Hydrogen Learning Demonstration Project kickoff in Washington, D.C. Inergy will use the DaimlerChrysler F-Cell in daily use to provide further knowledge on operational capabilities and to help conduct research on hydrogen storage. Daily use of the F-Cell will supply technical data that will help improve the next generation of fuel cell vehicles (FCV)s. DaimlerChrysler’s efforts are continued proof that the company is committed to fuel cell vehicles. Inergy will refuel the F-Cell at the DTE Energy Hydrogen Technology Park in Southfield, Michigan, with a BP hydrogen dispenser. A community event at the Technology Park this Saturday, July 16th will give the public a chance to see how hydrogen is produced, stored and utilized. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see a UPS fuel cell-powered Sprinter Van and the Inergy F- Cell, both built by DaimlerChrysler. The largest fleet of fuel cell vehicles in the world is managed by DaimlerChrysler. The F-Cell delivered today is part of DaimlerChrysler’s 100- plus fuel cell vehicle fleet that the Company has put into service around the world. The Inergy F-Cell […]

Pennsylvania Enacts Significant Environmental Legislation

Gov. Edward G. Rendell today fulfilled his pledge to improve the economic and environmental health of Pennsylvania by signing into law Growing Greener II, a voter-approved plan that invests $625 million to clean up rivers and streams; protects natural areas, open spaces and working farms; and shores up key programs to improve quality of life and revitalize communities across the Commonwealth. “Securing this investment today will keep Pennsylvania ‘growing greener’ well into the future,” Rendell said. “We are entrusted as the stewards of our environment, and have a moral obligation to leave our soil, water and air in better condition than we found it for future generations. Growing Greener II embraces the priorities that all of us share in Pennsylvania. The new law brings to fruition more than a year of aggressive efforts by the governor to address some of the state’s most pressing environmental problems and help the state win the race for new development and job creation — and it accomplishes the feat without increasing fees or imposing new taxes. The measure passed the House of Representatives, 180-18, and Senate, 48-2. The plan is financed by permanently extending the $4.25 already paid in current Growing Greener tipping fees […]
