Congress May Block Plan for a Wind Farm in Nantucket Sound

A plan to build what could become the first large offshore wind farm in the United States would be effectively killed by a proposed amendment to a Coast Guard budget bill now making its way through Congress, people on both sides of the issue say. The amendment, offered by Representative Don Young, Republican of Alaska, would prohibit new offshore wind facilities within 1.5 nautical miles of a shipping lane or a ferry route. That would rule out construction of the installation, proposed for Nantucket Sound. The budget bill awaits action in a House-Senate conference committee. The installation would consist of 130 turbines in a grid that would occupy 24 square miles in the sound. Each tower, with its turbine and blades, would rise 420 feet above the water. The developer, a private company called Cape Wind Associates, says the turbines could produce three-quarters of the electricity now used on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Greenpeace, the American Lung Association and other organizations endorse the plan as an important step in reducing pollution and global warming. SunPower Gets $330M PowerLight Contract

SunPower Corp. (SPWR), on Thursday said it has entered into a $330 million product supply contract with PowerLight Corp., a privately-held global provider of solar systems, calling for the delivery of solar panels from 2005 through 2009. The contract covers a variety of SunPower solar products to be incorporated into PowerLight projects worldwide, as well as in their home state of California. A significant product covered under the contract is a custom-designed solar panel used in PowerLight’s SunTile(TM) roof integrated system for new home construction. SatCon Sells Business Line to QualMark

SatCon Technology Corporation (SATC) has sold its Ling Shaker and Amplifier product line to QualMark Corporation of Denver, Colorado for approximately $2.3 million in cash. Under the Ling Products name, SatCon has manufactured and sold electrodynamic shakers through the Power Systems Division located in Worcester, Massachusetts. This asset sale includes the intellectual property, manufacturing equipment and tooling and inventory for the Ling shaker products and the Kimball shaker accessories line. “Selling this business will facilitate SatCon’s Power Systems increasing focus on the alternative energy markets, providing high power solar, fuel cell and wind inverters and precision motors and components to the hybrid electric vehicle markets” noted Millard Firebaugh, SatCon President and Chief Operating Officer. QualMark President Charles Johnston said, “We look forward to relocating this business to our QualMark ACG facility in West Haven CT as soon as possible, and will take over the management of this product line immediately.” SatCon Power Systems Division will continue to design, manufacture, market and service the Starsine variable frequency converters under the SatCon trademark.
