Hydrogenics Corporation (TSX:HYG; NASDAQ:HYGS) has been awarded a US$8 million Fuel Cell contract for multiple units of its HyPM 500 Series Fuel Cell Power Modules from a world leading military OEM. The power modules, representing in aggregate over 600 kW of power capacity, will be delivered over a two year period starting in 2006. The modules will be used for an undisclosed application. “Winning this impressive contract through a competitive bid process is a strong validation of the performance, reliability, and durability of our HyPM power module technology,” said Pierre Rivard, President and CEO, Hydrogenics Corporation. “It is important to note that the power modules to be delivered under this contract are identical to the power modules that form the foundation of our products for the backup power and light mobility markets. As such, we believe that considerable benefits will accrue from this sale in terms of our product initiatives for these commercial markets.” Website: http://www.hydrogenics.com

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Board of Directors has adopted position statements to promote sustainable design and resource conservation to achieve a minimum reduction of 50% percent of the current consumption level of fossil fuels used to construct and operate buildings by the year 2010. To accomplish this goal, the AIA will collaborate with other national and international organizations, the scientific research community, and the public health community. As part of this initiative, the AIA will also develop and promote the integration of sustainability into the curriculum for the education of architects and architecture students, so that this core principle becomes a guiding mindset for current and future architects. “Buildings account for forty-eight percent of U.S. energy consumption and generate far more greenhouse gas emissions than any other sector,” said R.K. Stewart, FAIA, facilitator of the AIA Sustainability Summit Task Force. “As architects, we must accept responsibility for our role in creating the built environment. We feel it is incumbent upon the architecture profession to alter our actions and encourage both our clients and the entire design and construction industry to join us in plotting a course of measurable changes that will improve the quality of life for everyone.” […]

The Board of Water and Power Commissioners for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) took the first step today toward increasing renewable energy sources to 20 percent of the City’s power mix by 2010–seven years ahead of the renewable portfolio standard (RPS) goal that was adopted by the Board and the City Council earlier this year. Board President Mary E. Nichols asked LADWP management to begin meeting with neighborhood councils, homeowners, businesses and other stakeholders to discuss the accelerated RPS goals. The accelerated renewable energy plan, which was presented to the Board during a December 13 workshop, outlines how LADWP would further diversify its retail energy mix to meet the goal of 20 percent by 2010 by procuring renewable energy resources to own and/or purchase. The renewable resources will include a mix of wind, geothermal, biomass, landfill gas, small hydroelectricity, and solar power. “This Board believes we must plan for a greener Los Angeles and that we can meet future energy needs with cleaner resources while continuing high standards of reliability and maintaining a competitive price,” said Nichols. “We are all concerned about potential requirements to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and about the wild fluctuations in […]
