FuelCell Energy, Inc. (NasdaqNM:FCEL), a manufacturer of efficient electric power generation plants for commercial, industrial and government customers, announced that one of its 250- kilowatt Direct FuelCell (DFC) power plants, sold by its Asian distributor Marubeni Corporation (TSE:8002) to NTT Facilities, will be incorporated into an electric supply system providing reliable base load power to a university, a welfare institution, a high school and a water purification plant in Sendai City, in northeastern Japan. Sendai City’s DFC power plant is part of a 940 kilowatt (kW) high quality electric power system consisting of the fuel cell unit, a solar power system and a gas engine co-generation system. The high efficiency DFC power plants will be used by the end users to provide firm base load power and the surplus heat from the fuel cell unit will be used for domestic hot water. NTT, the parent company of NTT Facilities, is the top market share holder among the telecommunications industry in Japan and in 2005 was ranked as the 18th largest company in the world by Fortune Magazine. NTT Facilities will be responsible for comprehensive engineering services including the procurement of equipment, project development, project management, installation of the equipment including […]

Cree, Inc., a developer and manufacturer of semiconductor materials and electronic devices made from silicon carbide (SiC), has signed a definitive agreement to acquire privately held INTRINSIC Semiconductor Corporation, a researcher and developer of low defect density SiC substrates. Under the terms of the agreement, Cree will acquire all of the outstanding INTRINSIC capital stock and options based on a valuation of $46 million, with approximately $43.5 million to be paid in cash for the outstanding stock and the remainder to be paid through the assumption of outstanding INTRINSIC stock options. Integration of INTRINSIC’s technology into Cree’s materials product line should accelerate development of larger- diameter, high-quality SiC wafers, which should enable new high-power semiconductor devices and lower-cost LEDs. “INTRINSIC has developed the first commercially available, zero micropipe SiC substrates using their ZMP(TM) technology. We believe the combination of Cree’s technology and manufacturing expertise with INTRINSIC’s ZMP technology will accelerate the commercialization of low-defect 100mm and 150mm substrates. These substrates should not only support our cost roadmap for LEDs, but more importantly, they should also enable us to more rapidly commercialize higher-power devices for motor-control applications and hybrid vehicles,” stated Chuck Swoboda, Cree’s chairman and CEO. “We are extremely pleased […]

U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) hailed the Senate’s passage of his amendment last Thursday to increase the Department of Defense’s consumption of renewable energy – a measure that sets a statutory goal for the department of acquiring 25 percent of its electric from renewable energy sources by the year 2025. The Department of Defense currently acquires over eight percent of its electricity from renewable sources. The Menendez measure, co-sponsored by Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), is an amendment to the Department of Defense Authorization bill and was passed Tuesday by the Senate with unanimous consent. “As the federal government’s largest consumer of energy, the Defense Department can be at the vanguard of renewable energy consumption,” Menendez said. “The federal government must lead by example if more American businesses and families are to increase their usage of renewable energy.” The Department of Defense is the federal government’s most prolific user of electricity, using 55 percent of the government’s total consumption. By using renewable sources of electricity, the Defense Department would greatly impact the government’s overall demand for electricity. Renewable sources of energy include wind, solar, biomass, landfill gas, ocean, geothermal, municipal solid waste, and new hydroelectric generation capacity. The Defense Department has […]
